Actually, in IRS terms, that was less than a dog-year. As you might remember, the IRS ruled our company had to start paying our employees payroll taxes to them via electronic funds transfer (EFT) effective last July instead of thru one of their "authorized financial institutions" (that's what the rest of us call banks) and they charged us a 10% penalty as mandated by NAFTA even though all payments were made before the due date. To all of you who said (or thought): they can't do that, let me tell you, they can. Alan Keyes is wrong. Might does make right, just ask Milosevic---but they rescinded their penalty anyway. All $15,000 of it. Happy days, the govt is NOT going to rip us off of another $15K of hidden taxes. My boss was ecstatic when I told him. Don't tell anyone, but I got a hug. And you know what, I know this same scene had to going on all around America. We aren't the only company hit by their newest NAFTA tax stealth deadline. I'll bet there is many a tax payer who rolled over and paid their share of the "surplus" taxes. I'll bet there's many an accountant/ bookkeeper who lost their job when the tax notice came in. I've been thinking: why do they want us to send our money via EFT. It's not like they need it like a private corp would. My first thought was it gave them better control somehow, but I couldn't figure out how. Now I think I've got it. Banks used to make a lot of money acting as tax collectors for the govt. The govt is squeezing out the middleman, right? So the question is: who's got the monopoly on fees for EFTs? Want to be it'll turn out to be Standard Oil's Citi-Bank? I don't like feeling that cynical about the govt I once served proudly, but how can you help it? Look around you. Why did we "save" the Royal Family in Kuwait, and why did we look the other way when they exported all the commoners to lands of their forefathers? Why do we continue to make war on Iraq, now that the oilfields are safe (for US)? Why did we leave Somalia after one squad got a bloody nose? Why are we fighting with Muslims to cleanse Serb Christians and destabilize Yugoslavia? Why did we carve Bosnia out of Serbia? What was the ideal we were willing to bomb Haiti with B-52's (thank you Jimmy Carter, for preventing that) that was never accomplished? And why doesn't it matter now? There's got to be a reason for the troops in Kosovo, other than to maintain the lie about the 100,000 to 1,000,000 people buried in non-existent mass graves. Why are we willing to blockade the people of Cuba because we don't like their chosen leader? Ditto for Austria. Remember the "gay" rooster? Sometimes things aren't what the appear. Starr wasn't a hardnosed prosecutor, he was a pussycat. Bill Clinton didn't go to Bangkok, Indonesia and all these little nations to take in the sights. What did Hell-ary do in Africa while spending more money in a month than Starr did in 4 years? Why does Clinton favor Tony Blair, Yeltsin and Israel's Labor Party, but his predecessors favored all of their political opponents? Oh, so many dots, and so few lines to connect. Why/how did Clinton escape conviction after his impeachment when greater men have fallen for less? How can he attend 100 fundraisers a year when he's not out of the country? What does his veep do, besides attending twice as many fund raisers each year? (By the way, his new political advisers dress him a lot better than Tipper ever did, don't you think?) I've got a working theory, but I'm still assembling the pieces. Hell-ary has a lawyers background (Rose Law Firm and all that Whitewater stuff), so is it reasonable to assume she's plying her trade on her excursions to Israel, etc., forging political alliances? Want to bet Bill met with Riady while he was in Indonesia? It seems our troops were sent first to Bosnia and then to Kosovo at the behest of Tony Blair. Certainly there was no American natl interest there. But sooner or later you've got to wonder who's running this store. Back when John D Rockefeller headed up Standard Oil, we knew who was calling the shots. After the demise of Standard Oil, his descendants got "religion", political religion that is, and became Govs of NY, WV and Ark. Nelson Rockefeller ran for prez as a Republican candidate and climbed to veep. The Rockefeller political machine was dominant in both parties. In Ark the Dem machine was responsible for not only electing the Gov, it was also the chief supporter of Dale Bumpers, and his young protege, a kid named Bill Clinton. The dots are beginning to pile up. In NY the seat held by English Professor Moynihan is commonly referred to as the Rockefeller seat---and guess who's vying for that seat? The wife of a certain Rockefeller 2nd-generation protege. Could it be we've been swept into the global community where each country is divided into what we call liberals and conservatives? Could there be a giant world-wide war going on between liberals on one side and conservatives on the other? A world where the Clintons help the Blairs and Yeltsins maintain control, and visa versa? Has our country entered into various political alliances to commit our troops to defend political allies in Europe, without going through the messy "Advise and Consent" clause in the Constitution? Hey, I think I just connected 2 of the dots. Standard Oil own Citi-Bank, right? What's the connection between Citi-Bank and the EFT program? Wanna bet? Closing statement. "The U.S. economy just posted its largest gain in three years: Nearly 7 percent in 1999, the government number crunchers told us on Friday." You believe that and I've got a bridge in Brooklyn for your IRA. THE TRUTH IS... A. Powerful. C. In the eye of the beholder. B. Irrelevant. D. All of the above. Why does a 3 term conservative Senator suddenly get the yearn to become president and conclude the way to do it is to become a maverick and tear his party apart, alienating the very core of the party?
