Hi !
Below please find excerpts on fm"s."

All accusations are alleged.

from "Is There a False Memory Epidemic? by Stephanie J. Dallam, RN, MSN, FNP"
"In fact, the FMSF has no "documented" cases of false memory in its
records.... Freyd states: "We repeat what we have stated many times: we do
not know the truth or falsity of any of the reports that we receive" (Freyd,
March 1994)."
"Despite a repeated insistence on accuracy, the FMSF has continued to
disseminate reports containing inaccurate membership figures...."
"Mike Stanton ....In an article published in the Columbia Journalism Review,
... states: ....The foundation is an aggressive, well-financed P.R. machine
adept at manipulating the press, harassing its critics, and mobilizing a
diverse army of psychiatrists, outspoken academics, expert defense witnesses,
litigious lawyers, ... critics of psychotherapy, and devastated parents. With
a budget of $750,000 a year from members and outside supporters, the
foundation's reach far exceeds its actual membership of about 3,000. (pp.
44-5) Stanton notes that the press have neglected to examine the motivations
of the foundation and have relied heavily on "FMSF experts and propaganda"
for their information"
"No research has ever validated the existence of FMS as articulated by the
Foundation. (7, 8). Hovdestad & Kristiansen (1996) is the one study to date,
that has tested the assumptions underlying FMS. The authors surveyed 113
women with self-reported histories of incestapproximately half of whom
reported at least one recovered memory. Results indicated that participants
who had recovered memories of child sexual abuse and who could, therefore,
potentially be suffering from FMS, did not differ significantly from
participants with continuous memories. Moreover, none of the participants
satisfied the criterion for FMS proposed by the FMSF, and there was no
evidence that recovered memories were associated with certain types of
therapyin fact, 39.2% of the women recovered memories independent of
therapy. These findings led the authors to conclude that survivors are being
harmed by the "uncritical promotion of an invalidated syndrome." (9)
In contrast to the lack of empirical validation of FMS, Scheflin and Brown
recently reviewed the scientific literature on amnesia or repressed memory
for child sexual abuse; 25 studies were found, all of which demonstrated
amnesia. Scheflin and Brown (1996, p. 143) conclude that amnesia for child
sexual abuse is a robust finding across studies using very different samples
and measures of assessment. The authors also stated that research addressing
the accuracy of recovered abuse memories indicates that recovered memories
are no more or no less accurate than continuous memories of abuse."
