Since disinformation and lies are being posted to this list regarding
the recent institution of something called a 'family filter' on
Onelist, here is a post made today on the Onelist/eGroups merger email
list for list moderators which explains how the filter works. As I
stated in my previous post, it has absolutely no effect on email
posts.

There are messages circulating around a lot of lists regarding the
"Family Filter"
option. A lot of people aren't happy with it. My perception of the
filter is to block
access while doing a search on Onelist in case the kiddies may
stumble on a list
that has "Objectionable" material or content.

Now, according to messages I've seen on at least three lists, this
filter is slowing
down or blocking mail by filtering the content of messages for
objectionable
words and bouncing messages that aren't considered "suitable" if the
filter is
turned on. I would think based on the sheer volumes of mail going
through the
Onelist system that this would cause a backlog of mail if it didn't
in fact overload
the servers. However, this is the perception that is starting to
circulate through
 the lists.

Can you clarify this for me. Does the filter in fact perform this
function of reading
content for objectionable material or words, and if so, who is
responsible for
setting the criteria? If in fact this is not the case, then I would
suggest that a
message from the Admin people to list owners is in order here, so
that they can
inform members of what the filter actually entails and stop all these
rumours
 presently circulating on the lists.

 Moderator Responds: Thanks Ron.

To clarify, the family filter only works to narrow the number of
lists that will be
shown when one searches or browses through the groups.

OL/EG does not review the content of messages using human eyeballs or
automated programs. Messages pass through our system with good, bad
and
marginal content unless, and here's the only qualification, we
receive a complaint
from a member that a group is listed in the wrong category or is
violating our
terms of service. That TOS restricts members from engaging in a
number of
 unsavory and illegal practices.

If we receive a complaint we'll review content for compliance with
our TOS, but
that's the only case in which content is reviewed.
