Peace at any cost is a prelude to war!

Heaven Help Us!

By Chuck Baldwin

March 28, 2000

Recently, a press report said that a long tenured House member is taking a
30-day medical leave of absence to deal with an "alcohol-dependence
problem." Lest my comments be misunderstood, I will say up front that all
people of good will are obliged to lift up the Congressman and his family
in prayer during this unfortunate time. Both my wife and I have first-hand
experiences dealing with the pain and misery of having a drunkard in the
family. It’s neither pleasant nor wished upon anyone.

That said, the report brought to mind a recent investigation that was
conducted by Capitol Hill Blue. According to their findings:

*29 members of Congress have been accused of spousal abuse.

*7 have been arrested for fraud.

*19 have been accused of writing bad checks.

*117 have bankrupted at least two businesses.

*3 have been arrested for assault.

*71 have credit reports so bad they can’t qualify for a credit card.

*14 have been arrested on drug-related charges.

*8 have been arrested for shoplifting.

*21 are current defendants in lawsuits.

*84 were stopped for drunk driving in 1998 alone, but released after
claiming congressional immunity.

This report does not take into consideration the numbers of congressmen
that are serial adulterers or homosexuals or those who have various other
skeletons hanging around in their private closets. Politicians are, after
all, masters at hiding the truth and deceiving the public. In all
likelihood, the only ones who know for sure are the people who have
possession of those 900 FBI files!

America is dying for want of principled leadership! It wasn’t that long ago
when a leading Democratic candidate for president, Gary Hart, was driven
from the race when a picture surfaced showing him with an attractive lady
not his wife sitting on his lap. Compared to today’s shenanigans, however,
that seems completely benign.

Not only are the virtues of honesty and morality not prerequisites for
leadership, they seem to be viewed as liabilities! We want smart
politicians, not saintly ones. We extol success, not character. Money and
position count for more than integrity and honor. So jaded is our
conscience that we think it clever, not sinful, when our preferred
candidate deceives the American people in an attempt to get their votes.
What does that say about us?

In my library is a collection of books that I try to read at least once a
year. One of them is "Patton’s Principles-A Handbook for Managers Who Mean
it!" by Porter B. Williams. Mr. Williams served with General George S.
Patton and wrote of what he learned from that experience. In the book,
Williams quotes Patton as saying:

"Never take counsel of your fears." (People whose only reason for
supporting Bush is their fear of Gore should pay close attention to that
piece of advice!)

"Summer soldiers will be transferred before the sun goes down." (People who
think that their financial and material wellbeing is the principle issue of
life need to take heed to that statement.)

"Say what you mean and mean what you say." (Can this kind of leader ever be
elected in America again?)

"Keep your feet clean and study the Bible." (Does anyone believe this is
important?)

"Never fear failure." (Conservatives today are scared-silly about losing an
election. Would to God they were that concerned about losing truth and
character!)

Williams says, "Good commanders must be so stupid that they will attack in
the face of fear. Churchill was a fool to say, ‘We will fight on the
beaches, in the streets, in our homes … and though this nation last a
thousand years, this will be our finest hour!’ Not polite words, but he
spoke the truth."

(If Churchill was not afraid to be called a fool for defying the forces of
socialism on the battlefield, I am not afraid of being called a fool for
"wasting my vote" to oppose the ever-increasing socialism I see in both
major parties today!)

"A good commander is an expert at facing truth." (That is something I find
lacking in many people today, including Republicans.)

"In the long run, it is what we do not say that will destroy us." (While
talking conservative, many Republicans are doing the very things that
liberal Democrats do, namely, compromising constitutional government! In
the end, what will party label mean, therefore?)

Given the kinds of leaders that we Americans are willing to elect and
defend today, all I can say is Heaven help us!
