Rabbis Approve Same-Sex Unions
GREENSBORO, NC (MCNS -- The largest group of American Jewish Rabbis has given the nod
to homosexual "commitment ceremonies." Delegates at
the Central Conference of American Rabbis on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a
resolution that clears the way for same-sex couples to
participate in Jewish rituals similar to those conducted at heterosexual weddings.

"This is not a woman's issue, or a gay or lesbian issue. This is a human rights
issue," Rabbi Shira Stern, who heads the Women's
RabbinicNetwork, told CNSNews.

"For Jews who have no choice in the matter of sexual identity, we as leaders of the
movement must provide them with the religious framework
in which to celebrate their union.

The resolution applies to the 1,800 members of the Central Conference of American
Rabbis, who serve at least 1.5 million Reform Jews. Reform
Judaism is the largest and most liberal of Judaism's three major branches in North
America.

Rabbi Charles Kroloff, CCAR's president, told AP that the resolution shows the
conference's belief that "gay and lesbian Jews, and the
committed relationships they form with their partners, deserve the recognition and
respect due to people created in the image of God."

For more than a decade, Reform rabbis across the United States have led same-sex
ceremonies at their synagogues with varying degrees of
formality, from simple blessings of a gay Jewish home to full-fledged wedding
facsimiles, rings and all.

"It is not sinful to be a gay and lesbian," Rabbi Paul Menitoff, executive vice
president of CCAR, said. "It is sinful to have these
prejudices and act out on them."

Both Kroloff and Menitoff stressed the same-sex ceremonies weren't civil marriages
recognized by law, but Kroloff said that some rabbis who
have already been performing the ceremonies call them marriages.

The Torah condemns male homosexual intercourse, but a decade ago Reform Judaism
approved openly gay rabbis. Reform Judaism's rabbinate bases
its position on contemporary understanding of homosexuality and the Jewish values of
human dignity and justice.
