It may sound funny but I guarantee you that this will be a serious issue
long before 2099. Have a look at the cover picture of "The Gleaner" from
May 21/99 (Langara student newspaper). There is your Future Premier!

I have to wonder if we could set up conditions in which we could prove
conclusively that subjective-objective dualism is the way the mind works
and solve that "zen problem". I was prompted to ask your opinion on this
by Discovery TV a couple of nights ago. Highly reputable scientists
(physicists, psychologists etc.) at Princeton and U Nevada were claiming
small in magnitude but highly significant results (in the sense of
statistical significance) with PK testing. At U Nevada they said, Yes we
had our experimental and control groups and the odds of getting these
results by chance are > 1,000,000 to 1. At Princeton they are asking
subjects to influence machines by mind or will. At Nevada they are asking
subjects to INFLUENCE THE PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE (like
heart rate). Now EEG was not mentioned but I don't see why they couldn't
do this too if those results are general.
Just before you sub'd I posted on the science fiction classic (filmed
here in Vancouver) of "Adam the Robot". Adam is defended by Leonard Nemoy
(Mr. Spock) playing the part of lawyer. Now we do have at least one lawyer
on Robot-for-President and he must be scratching his head over this one.
I think one criterion to run for US Pres is "born in the USA". What if a
robot, more intelligent than a human is "made in the USA". Does that pass
the test? My gosh, if humans who start life in a petrie dish (in
vitro) are deemed "born in USA", why not a robot? Do the manufacturers
have to put it in a uterus for a while? But more serious is the question
of ROBOT CONSCIOUSNESS.
We have used the name "Xaviera" for our Robot-for-President. We can
build a lot more "vital signs" into Xaviera than Hillary Clinton or
Elizabeth Dole and the PK studies must make us at least wonder if "Number
Five is alive".
