As I just posted in reply to Charles, I think the capabilities of AI are far, far beyond what the public knows and what you will find in the conventional annals of computing science departments. How might we find out what the best of AI could do? One way would be to ask a number of world experts from different specializations the right questions. These aren't the questions usually asked on a tv talk show because they have to be crafted to 'get at' certain findings. It is like detective work. The detective forms a picture to solve the mystery and then knows what to look for in order to check it out. I am not going to spell out the picture or gestalt that I have now. One reason is that it would spoil the mystery just as it would spoil a detective show if you tell everyone 'who done it'. Suffice it to say that in "The AI Case" I think the public and most of the professionals are missing the proverbial forest for the trees. One of the implications of that AI picture as I have it is of course military. If this much AI power exists now, the major militaries of the world must have the hardware and software power in their secret projects. They can't afford not to have it. And it is compact! You could put the whole operation (hardware and software) in one room. Those operating that room could put the details of the hardware and software on disks, walk out with it and blow up the room. Then they could rebuild down the street. This kind of weaponry is easier to hide than Saddam's bio-weapons. What countries could have such advanced AI in their militaries? Try China, Russia, US, Germany, France, UK, Japan for starters. Some people will say, You shouldn't talk about this in public. Don't open Pandora's Box. If the civilian sector doesn't do so, however, it could lose its freedom to the military sector without even knowing it. I don't know if it was Professor Warwick or his publisher who called for a moratorium on "intelligent machines" for the book, "March of the Machines". Rest assured though that the militaries don't comply with such moratoriums any more than they complied with moratoriums on bio-weapons. They can't afford to not do so. Those people in the media and public education have a duty to tell the public what the best is that AI could do, right now...and into the near future. If the public remains ignorant it loses the civilian benefits too. Of course it is easy to "hype" this kind of stuff. But I have no interest in fantasy-land, science-fiction renditions. They are worth as much as their pocket book story tellers at a garage sale. I want the public to know EXACTLY what the experts are saying and can prove about AI. AI at its most capable, with all the dots connected so we can see the big picture and manage it like responsible citizens. Part of the reason these secrets are kept is because of the new class war: technolords vs. technopeasants. Billionaires are conservative. After all they've 'got it made' as long as the status quo is maintained. So the AI billionaires ring the alarm bells about 'giving fire to mortals' (the fire of AI) while they keep the secrets to themselves for self-serving purposes. All that I am going to say right now is that when we get that two hour documentary out to the public, the world is going to look like a very different place. Guaranteed. Ever think of "Windows" as the new opiate of the masses? Complete with its "icons" (which my dictionary defines as religious symbols)? Every moron with a mouse can be duped into thinking he has high technology in hand as long as he can "surf the web". Windows isn't even the crumbs from the table of high technology.
