BILL'S CYNICAL ELIAN PLOY
Is there no end to the Clintonites' duplicity? Even when the
president's people are right - which isn't often - they still
feel compelled to bend the truth.
Concerning little Elian Gonzalez, we agree with the Justice
Department and the Immigration and Naturalization Service stance
that the boy should be reunited with his father - even if that
means eventually sending him back to Castro's Cuba.
Butrather than simply stand on principle, the administration
retained the services of New York pediatrician Irwin Redlener -
who "diagnosed" a case of child abuse by Elian's Miami relatives
of the sort that, seven years ago, led Janet Reno to dispatch the
troops to Waco.
"Elian Gonzalez is now in a state of imminent danger to his
physical and emotional well-being in a home that I consider to be
psychologically abusive," wrote Redlener.
The doctor has never examined Elian. He based his opinion solely
on his viewing of the now-notorious videotape in which Elian
declared that he wants to stay in the United States. Nonetheless,
Redlener is now demanding that "the child should be rescued" from
his relatives.
But it turns out that Redlener is far from the dispassionate
observer depicted by the Justice Department. On the contrary -
he's about as close as can be found to a Clinton administration
house physician.
A veteran of left-wing political causes, Redlener chaired a
"National Health Leadership Council for Clinton/Gore" during the
1992 campaign. For that, he was rewarded with a vice chairmanship
of Hillary Clinton's disastrous health-care task force in 1993 -
and he continued to sing its praises long after it had been
thoroughly discredited.
Of course, Redlener is not the only Clinton connection to this
case. Greg Craig, who is described as the lawyer for Elian's
father - although clearly he was hired by the Cuban government -
was one of the president's chief impeachment lawyers.
No doubt Clinton & Co. don't feel confident of carrying the day
unless their shills are preaching the administration line while
pretending to be neutral observers.
This is yet another pointed reminder that the Cuban-Americans in
Miami are not the only ones who have shamelessly politicized this
entire episode.
