April 24, 2000 5:23 PM EST Waco Judge: Infrared Didn't Show Gunfire The federal judge handling the civil law suit against the government's handling of the Waco raid disclosed today that independent court experts found that infrared film did not indicate federal officials had fired ino the compound. Critics and survivors of the raid had argued that the infrared film taken by a plane above the Koresh compound showed flashes of heat consistent with the rapid release of gunfire. A British defense consulting group called Vector Data Systems conducted the analysis of the infrared tape and compared it to a simulated tape the experts made during a March 19 simulation at Fort Hood, Tex. Eighty Davidians died as a result of the raid on April 19, 1993. Critics have also pointed to the fact -- very rarely reported in the press -- that 17 Davidians were found with gunshot wounds -- their bodies found near the exit where the infrared showed alleged gunfire. Autopsies later confirmed the individuals had not died from the fire, but from gunfire. Judge Smith reported, however, "They (Vector) detected no muzzle blasts either from Davidian or Federal agents."
