<< Castro may be reaping a public relations windfall from the tragedy that has
befallen the Gonzalez family. He may even have the law on his side in this
 case.
But none of that should obscure the fact that the whole episode probably
would never have occurred if the Cuban dictator had long ago instituted the
economic and political reforms Cuba's people so plainly need. Fidel Castro,
unifier of the Cuban family? The pose is pure hypocrisy.

Castro is Castro. I can't say I like oppressive governments anywhere, but
Cuba is not the worst of them all. It is, however, the one the United
States hates the most. It is very strange that we can be buddies with every
communist nation the world over, assist insane dictators who are torturing,
maiming and killing their subjects just for the fun of it, but are forever
unforgiving of a little island off our coast because the gambling
establishments of the mafia and the beach front mansions of our super rich
were taken away from them. I recall writing letters to congressmen years
ago pushing for missing children to be listed on the FBI central computer.
It seemed that cars were listed, but children were not considered as
important as "property." It follows that the crimes of the Stalinists and
the Maoists were not nearly as important as the confiscated property of our
rich and famous. Prudy
