Court Date For Sex Columnist Dan Savage Set May 9 LINDSEY A. HENRY The Des Moines Register 04/27/00 The Seattle sex columnist facing felony voter fraud charge will appear May 9 in Polk County District Court, his lawyer said Wednesday. Because Dan Savage is returning to Des Moines on his own, attorney Mark Weinhardt said he doesn't expect Savage to be arrested. In a "Stalking Gary Bauer" article published Jan. 25 in the online magazine Salon.com, Savage explained his infiltration into the conservative Republican"s Iowa caucus campaign. Savage, who is gay, described how he used his temporary address at Des Moines" Kirkwood Hotel to vote in the January caucuses, and called it an act of protest. Savage also claimed he tried to infect Bauer with the flu by licking doorknobs and slobbering on pens at campaign headquarters. The author later recanted the story and said it was all a joke. In an interview with The Des Moines Register earlier this year, Savage declined to say whether he cast a vote in the caucuses, as he claimed in the article. By offering to appear, Savage avoided extradition from Washington. Officials in the Polk County attorney's office declined comment. Weinhardt said it would be up to District Judge Robert Wilson whether to put Savage in jail after his appearance. The arrest warrant sets his bail at $11,700. "The court will decide about the bond situation," Weinhardt said. "I expect that he will be permitted to reside in Washington state based on his willingness to appear." Savage has declined comment. Weinhardt said Savage "absolutely takes this seriously."
