China intercepts US aircraft spying on military movement: report

TAIPEI, April 27 (AFP) -

A US reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted Thursday by the
Chinese air force off eastern China when it was spying on Chinese
military movement, it was reported here.

The US RC-135 aircraft, from Okinawa, was intercepted at 28,000
feet on the skies of East China Sea, Taiwan's ET Today Internet
news quoted an unnamed general here as reporting.

"This was the first time in three years the People's Liberation
Armyair force scrambled to intercept an unidentified aircraft out
of its airspace," the general was quoted as saying.

"The move suggested the some PLA units, very likely ballistic
missile units, must be moving on the borders of Zhejiang and
Fujian provinces," he said.

The defense ministry was not able to confirm the report.

Defense ministry spokesman Kung Fan-ding told reporters Tuesday
mainland B-6 bombers and fighters had been involved in "training
exercises" which appeared to be a prelude to wargames.

"Their navy also launched training programs in the waters off the
eastern province of Zhejiang and from there to the Diaoyu
islands," Kung said.

In reaction to the report, China said the PLA exercises were
"normal," but reiterated its warning that any move by Taiwan
towards independence would mean war.

"As far as military exercises carried out by the People's
Liberation Army (are concerned), this is normal and is aimed at
enhancing the capability of the Chinese military," foreign
ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said.

The ET Today said the interception reminded the warning given by
Defense Minister Tang Fei, then deputy chief of the General
Staff, ahead of the missile crisis in March 1996.

"The PLA aircraft's increased sorties in northern Fujian indicate
there must be crucial military movment, and the past experience
showed there must be movement of M-class ballistic missile
units," Tang was quoted as predicting in

And two weeks later after Tang's warning, the PLA did lob
ballistic missiles into the shipping lanes off Taiwan to
intimidate voters here not to back President Lee Teng-hui who was
seeking another four-year term.

The sabre-rattling ended only after Washington sent two battle
carrier groups to waters off the island.

Beijing's war-threatening moves were sparked by Lee's landmark US
visit in 1995 which Beijing alleged was part of his efforts to
split the island from the "motherland."

Taiwan and China were split in 1949 at the end of a civil war.
