CME Occurred April 30th, Believed Headed Towards Earth...05/01/00 by Mitch Battros (ECTV) (NASA) A coronal mass ejection recorded by the SOHO spacecraft on April 30 appears to be at least partially Earth-directed. If the eruption did send material toward our planet, the shock wave will probably arrive on May 2nd or 3rd. Forecasters estimate a 30% chance of active geomagnetic conditions at middle-latitudes on May 3, 2000. The diminutive sunspot 8976 unleashed a C7-class solar flare on April 30 with an associated coronal mass ejection (see above) that could be Earth-directed. Both 8976 and the larger spot 8970 exhibit beta-gamma magnetic fields, which makes them potential sites for additional eruptions. Forecasters estimate a 30% chance for an M-class flare during the next 24 hours. Equation: Sunspots = Solar Flares = Magnetic Shift = Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents = Extreme Weather In addition to possible Aurora Borealis on May 2nd/3rd, watch for severe weather around the world.
