ON THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE

The American Conservative Union Foundation, one of the nation's
leading conservative institutions, announced that thirty-six national
conservative organizations have formed a coalition to lobby at the
national party conventions for the adoption of conservative platform
planks. Among the groups are Americans for Tax Reform, the Christian
Coalition, Citizens Against Government Waste, the Competitive
Enterprise Institute, the Independent Women's Forum, the National
Rifle Association, National Right to Life PAC, and National Taxpayers
Union.

>From the Bush campaign journal...

George W. announced that Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who has strong
pro-life and conservative credentials, would head the Republican
National Convention's platform committee. RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson
called Gov. Thompson "an articulate advocate of smaller, smarter
government, greater freedom and stronger families. His leadership and
vision will be invaluable as our party crafts a platform that reflects
the hopes and ideas of Republicans and a majority of Americans."

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge said the GOP platform plank
should be changed to reflect a wider range of Republicans' views on
abortion. "The fact that it fails to recognize that good people could
differ is not the best kind of signal that you would want to send, in
my judgment."

The current platform as approved in 1996 states, "The unborn child has
a fundamental individual right to life, which cannot be infringed." An
appendix states, however, "The Republican Party welcomes individuals
on each side of the abortion issue, encourages their open discussion,
solicits their active participation in the party, and respects their
positions and beliefs."

Mr. John McCain is still hovering in the wings. Asked if he would
"enthusiastically endorse" Mr. Bush even if they do not reach an
agreement on campaign finance reform, McCain said, "If I didn't, I
would be litmus testing him, and I don't think that's appropriate for
me to do. But I believe he has begun to and is continuing to pursue a
reform agenda."

On the trail, talking about colossal mistakes, George W. had this to
say about that "read my lips" thing: "I think the mistake was to say,
'read my lips' ... and then raise the taxes. I think it undermined
some of his credibility, particularly with Republicans and fiscal
conservatives."

Memo to Mr. Bush: The mistake was not keeping his word with the
American people, and that undermined virtually ALL of his credibility
with fiscal and social conservatives.

Observation Points:
"Senator McCain said he was going to drop out of the presidential
race. But he hasn't quite gotten around to it yet. He's still
clutching the microphone and waiting for his close-up. And he's still
scuffling with W., trying to out-macho, out-patriot and out-moralize
the man who beat him." -- Maureen Dowd {} "On key issues, Bush
sounds more like a centrist democrat than Gore. ... On a series of
major issues, Bush has embraced the exact position taken by the
[Democratic Leadership Council] and its congressional allies, while
Gore has either kept his distance or actively opposed the DLC stance.
.. [While] disagreements between Bush and an organization so
intimately linked to the Clinton administration are hardly
surprising...it's more revealing that Bush and the DLC agree so much."
--Ron Brownstein {} "...[R]unning as a Republican on Democrats'
rhetoric is hardly an example of high principles." --Thomas Sowell

>From Bore2000 -- The "Family Values" Campaign...

"Tipper and I send the best wishes for a wonderful event. We are
proud to have you here." --A letter from Al Gore to the organizers of
the Millennium March for Equality, a rally of homosexual advocates
featuring Ellen DeGeneres, who told the crowd that she would like to
shove the counter-demonstrators' signs "up their...." Another speaker
suggested using the Washington Monument as, shall we say, a strap-on
organ to sodomize conservatives.

In other news from the Vice Prevaricator, he proposed drug-test
requirements for prisoners and parolees -- excluding White House
employees.

On Mr. Bush, Gore says, "He dangerously fixates on the Cold War past
when speaking of the use of force. He suggests he would not intervene
to relieve even the brutal repression of ethnic cleansing and
genocide. One has to assume these gaps in Governor Bush's foreign
policy views will be filled by the ideologies and inveterate
antipathies of his party; the right wing, partisan isolationism of the
Republican congressional leadership. ... We are in a global age. Like
it or not, we live in an age when our destinies and the destinies of
billions of people around the globe are increasingly intertwined. We
should neither bemoan nor naively idealize this new reality. We should
deal with it."

Translation: Let's do away with that old notion of sovereignty and
party with the UN!

GoreGasms:
"I believe we have not just a chance, but an obligation, to use
today's prosperity to make sure no American is left out or left
behind." {} "To me, Social Security is more than a government
program. It is a solemn compact between the generations." (In 1992,
Bill Clinton said he was launching the "new covenant" between man and
government -- presumably replacing that "old" Covenant. Now AlGore
sees Social Security as the new covenant Village's answer to that old
family bond between generations.)

Observation Points:
"The Gore campaign often plays the Fatboy Slim song "Praise You" at
events.... But the album it's on comes with a 'Parental Advisory
Explicit Content' sticker. Don't tell Tipper." --National Review
Online. {} "Over the weekend Al 'Yo-Soy-Un-Hombre-Sincero' Gore
turned his attention from pandering to the Cuban-American community in
Miami to pandering to the Latino community of Los Angeles. This, just
before he attended a billion dollar soft-money fund raising event in
that barrio of every-day-people, Beverly Hills." --Rich Galen

Oh, HILLARY! Rodham-Clintonista...

"As a person of faith, I am appalled that [Rudy] would make false
statements about me and my respect for religion," says HILLARY! We
suppose she is referring to her "faith in government." (See the "new
covenant" in the previous section.)

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"President Clinton appears to have most of the U.S. government
beavering away on behalf of Fidel Castro's agenda these days. But a
few officials have been excused from Elian duty for another task: They
are trying to persuade Russia to let the U.S. defend itself against
the growing threat of ballistic-missile attack by the likes of North
Korea or Iraq or some similar danger in the future. It is a mystery,
best left to those who will parse the Clinton presidency in years to
come, why the U.S. has put itself in the preposterous position of
seeking Moscow's permission to build a defense against a rogue nation
or an accidental missile launch. This ought to be a national security
priority, not a matter for diplomatic negotiation. The administration
has already wasted seven precious years in refusing to pursue a
defense against this growing threat. With less than a year remaining
of the Clinton era, the essential task now is to make sure the next
president's hands aren't tied for the important job ahead." --Wall
Street Journal

DEZINFORMATSIA

"While Fidel Castro...is widely criticized for a lot of things, there
is no question that Castro feels a very deep and abiding connection to
those Cubans who are still in Cuba. ...there's little doubt in my mind
that Fidel Castro was sincere when he said, 'listen, we really want
this child back here'." --CBS talkinghead Dan Rather ++
"Cuban-Americans, Ms. Falk, have been quick to point fingers at Castro
for exploiting the little boy. Are their actions any less
reprehensible?" --Bryant Gumball ++ "The one thing that most, that
I've learned about Cubans in the many times that I have visited here
in the last few years, is that it is mostly a nationalistic country,
not primarily a communist country." --NBC's Jim Avila ++ "Tipper,
one of the things that Elian Gonzalez's father said that I guess would
be hard to argue with, that his boy's safer in a school in Havana than
in a school in Miami. He would not be shot in a school in Havana. Good
point?" --CNN's Larry "King of the Talkingheads" to Tipper Gore.

SOCIOCRATS

"So little time, so many unanswered questions. For example, over the
last few months I've lost 10 pounds. Where did they go? Why haven't I
produced them for the Independent Counsel?" --Mr. Clinton **Must be in
the same closet with those e-mails! {} "I've been over it and over
it and I don't know any other way we could have done it. Other people
will have to decide whether I made the right decision. I look at those
pictures [of Elin with his father], though, and feel very, very
happy." --Janet Reno on "Oprah." {} "We shouldn't let our
familiarity with Bill Clinton stop us from appreciating the depth and
range of his accomplishments as president." --Clintonista Dale
Bumpers, in a letter soliciting donations for The Great Prevaricator's
Presidential Library

VILLAGE IDIOTS

"Listen to this -- the [research on teens] found that teenagers that
had dinner with their parents five nights a week are far more likely
to avoid smoking, drinking, violence, suicide and drugs." --Mr.
Clinton **You mean parents do matter? We thought "it [just] takes a
village." {} "At our Easter family reunion...there were loud cheers
and applause as we watched the first footage of [INS] agents storming
into Lzaro Gonzlez's house in Miami and escaping with the weeping
Elin in a white van." --Camille Paglia {} "Puerto Rico has been
invaded again. I can promise you tomorrow there will be civil
disobedience all over the United States." --Vieques Island protester,
New York City Councilman Jose Rivera, as he was led away by a U.S.
marshal. **Hey, where are all the protests? Call Geraldo! {} From
the "Village Academic Curriculum" File: In recent standardized testing
in Montgomery County (Maryland), 90% of students at Albert Einstein
High School flunked Algebra I.

SHORT CUTS

"I can send him to fundraising events I have to turn down." --Rudy
Giuliani, on his wax replica at Madame Tussaud's museum. Of course, Al
Gore does the same thing, but who could tell the difference!  {}
"Janet Reno: Better late than never. Waco. Ruby Ridge. The third
time's the charm." --Newsweek's "Conventional Wisdom Watch."  {}
"Lousy! I'm highly medicated. I could go at any moment." --Kathie Lee
Gifford when asked how she was doing by Regis Philbin on the celebrity
episode of ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." {} "My Web site is
called BuddyHackett.com because UpYours.com was taken." --Comedian
Buddy Hackett {} The bumper sticker "If Guns Are Outlawed Only
Outlaws Will Have Guns" needs amending to read "If Guns Are Outlawed
Only Outlaws And The Government Will Have Guns." Of course, that
would be redundant. --Member Comments {} Internet 101: Don't open
unexpected attachments with dubious names. --The Editor

Night Lines:

Leno.... At a White House conference on teenagers, First Lady Hillary
spoke of the pivotal period between childhood and responsible
adulthood. Or as Bill calls it, "my presidency." .... Al Gore visited
a pharmacy, got some Advil. I guess all this flip flopping on the
Elian issue hurt his back. .... Four of Elian's playmates have
arrived from Cuba, plus their parents, plus a Cuban doctor, plus 12
more playmates plus his former kindergarten teacher. Would the last
person out of Cuba, turn off the lights, please? .... In Al Gore's
$500 million crime plan, he has called for drug testing of prison
inmates. What happens if you flunk the test, do you go to prison
prison? .... Did you see the celebrity "Who Wants to be a
Millionaire?" Kathie Lee was on there last night and she topped out at
$33,000. Did you see the question that she missed? I think it was
"What is the minimum wage?"

Letterman.... CBS has exclusive rights for a four-part series on O.J.
Simpson. And we have exclusive rights to his next murder. You remember
O.J. Simpson, don't you? He's the one that got better treatment from
the police than Elian Gonzalez. .... I thought this was nice. There
will be about 12 of Elian's classmates here in the United States and
Janet Reno has promised each and every one of them their very own
pre-dawn raid.

O'Brien.... An 8 year old child asked the First Lady if she was more
important than Leonardo DiCaprio. The First Lady said "Definitely
not." She also said that she isn't as "feminine as Di Caprio." ....
Sunday afternoon, Al Gore spoke at a rally of janitors who are on
strike and Gore spoke alternately in English and Spanish. This marks
the first time Gore has been simultaneously ignored in two languages.

Kilborn.... Mr. Al Gore is campaigning now to make medical marijuana
legal and to also improve medical treatment for the elderly. In order
to do this, Al Gore is encouraging the development of the first
Craftmatic adjustable bong. .... This is National Karaoke Week.
Karaoke is a Japanese word for drunken loser.
