Rising tides are damaging coastal habitats By environment correspondent Robert Pigott Environmental groups are meeting on beaches throughout Britain on Saturday to highlight the damage caused by the rising level of the sea. Most scientists agree that the warming of the earth's atmosphere will push tides steadily higher. Naturalists say marshes and estuaries which provide homes to a wide range of plant and animal species are being rapidly eroded. Low Tide 2000 will also see similar events on dozens of beaches in Ireland, France and North America. They will include walks and guided tours of rock pools and mud flats, and opportunities to spot coastal seabirds. Oceans expanding Environmentalists are growing increasingly alarmed at the loss of habitats in the zone between high and low tide. Higher water is flooding such areas, and where sea walls are put up, mud flats and salt marshes tend to be washed away altogether. It is thought that the warming of the earth's atmosphere is expanding the water of the world's oceans, causing the rise in sea levels. The impact is all the greater in areas such as the south-east of England, which have been sinking since the end of the last ice age.
