'Vitamin O' Sellers Settle FTC Charges For $375,000

WASHINGTON, May 03 (Reuters) - The marketers of a "nutritional supplement"
touted as a cure for cancer and heart disease, but which the US government
says is just salt water, have agreed to pay $375,000 to settle charges that
they made false health claims, the Federal Trade Commission said on Monday.

The FTC said that advertisements for "Vitamin O" in national newspapers and
on the Internet claimed that the supplement could treat or prevent serious
diseases such as cancer, heart disease and lung disease by enriching the
bloodstream with supplemental oxygen.

But in its initial complaint filed in March last year, the agency said that
the product, sold for about $20 for a 2-ounce bottle, "appears to be nothing
more than salt water." The settlement would bar two Washington-based
companies, Rose Creek Health Products Inc. and The Staff of Life Inc., and
their owner, Donald Smyth, from making unsupported claims that "Vitamin O"
has any health benefits or that its effectiveness has been established by
medical or scientific research.

The companies will be required to pay $375,000 in consumer redress within 10
days of the settlement's approval by the Federal District Court in Spokane,
Washington.
