Nader Says Gore's Defeat May Be Better for Democratic Party
Washington, May 7 (Bloomberg) -- Green Party presidential
candidate Ralph Nader said a loss by Vice President Al Gore to
Texas Governor George W. Bush in November might provide the
``cold shower'' needed to help reenergize the liberal base of the
Democratic party.
Nader said he isn't concerned that his support among liberals
could cost Gore crucial votes against Bush, since he believes it
doesn't matter whether a Republican or Democrat wins the White
House this year.
``These two parties are so marinated in big business money they
can't be internally reformed,'' Nader said on NBC's ``Meet the
Press.'' ``Citizen's groups can't get anything done anymore.''
A recent survey showed 11 percent of liberals support Nader over
Gore, and the consumer activist repeated his goal of winning 5
percent of the vote to make the party eligible for millions of
dollars in matching campaign funds for future races.
Nader accused Gore of breaking ``more of his priorities in eight
years than probably any other politician,'' including on issues
such as the environment, consumer policy and protecting small
farmers.
``He has pandered to big business, he has pandered to the types
of lobbies in Washington that are taking over the city,'' Nader
said. ``Al Gore will go anywhere in the country to raise big
money.''
Nader, who won 684,000 votes in 36 states as the Green Party's
presidential nominee in 1996, also said he supports abortion
rights, same-sex civil marriages and decreased military spending.
The Green Party, which claims 100,000 registered members in the
U.S., backs environmental causes, including protection of
endangered species and opposition to the use of hormones and
antibiotics in livestock.
With Nader and likely Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan
factored into the presidential race, Bush leads Gore by a margin
of 47 to 41 percent, according to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll
released last week.
