You could not be more right.
Some time ago I had a conversation with our local MP regarding the Dangerous
Dogs Act, and I wanted to know why he voted against it, when it was clear
and obvious that his constituents wanted him to vote for it as our
representative in parliament. His answer was quite an education!
He maintains that he is NOT our representative in parliament at all! He is a
member of the conservative party and will always vote the way that the party
office wants him to. If our views coincide with his own, great, if not,
tough luck. He further maintains that when we vote in a general election, we
are voting for a political party, not for an MP. Therefore, he will always
follow his own agenda, regardless of the interests of his constituents.
This is what we call democracy.
It is a farce.
