Tax Police Raid Media Group Opposed to Kremlin
MOSCOW, May 11, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Russian police
have raided the headquarters of the Media-MOST group run by media
baron Vladimir Gusinsky, whose outlets have sharply criticized
the Kremlin, the Interfax news agency reported Thursday.
Armed tax police accompanied by officers from the interior
ministry's economic crimes unit took part in the operation,
Interfax reported, citing police sources.
Searches were also being carried out at the group's NTV-Internet
and Memonet subsidiaries, the agency reported.
Media Most groups some of the best-known private media outlets in
Russia, notably the national NTV television channel, the Echo
Moscow radio station and the Sevodnya daily newspaper.
Once pro-Kremlin, the group backed Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov and
former prime minister Yevgeny Primakov ahead of legislative
elections last December. They ran on a platform overtly hostile
to the Kremlin.
During March presidential elections, the group provided liberal
reformer Grigory Yavlinsky with a platform to attack the Kremlin
of ex-president Boris Yeltsin and the man who eventually
succeeded him, Vladimir Putin.
