STROKES LEND THE ABILITY TO DETECT A LIE A study in the journal Nature suggests that people who have suffered a stroke may gain a surprising benefit -- an advantage in spotting liars, particularly when the untruths are given away by changes in facial expression. The phenomenon occurs in patients who develop a loss in language ability, called aphasia, as a result of a stroke. "As far back as the 1920s there are anecdotal reports of patients with aphasia being able to detect when people were lying," says Nancy Etcoff, a psychologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) who led the study. "(They) seem to be more sensitive to... nuances in facial expression that reveal a disconnect between what someone is trying to express and what they really are feeling."
