Former MI5 chief aims to publish memoirs
BY MICHAEL EVANS, DEFENCE EDITOR

THE former MI5 chief Dame Stella Rimington has caused the Government an unprecedented problem by writing a book about her career.
The first Director-General of MI5 to "put pen to paper" about the Security Service, she has submitted her manuscript to Sir Richard Wilson, the Cabinet Secretary. He is discussing the implications of publication with her, the Home Secretary, and the present head of MI5.
Whitehall officials emphasised last night that the discussions were amicable and that Dame Stella had no intention of revealing anything that would damage national security. However, the manuscript was being examined in detail and it was possible that it might never be published.
Whitehall officials rejected any comparison with other former MI5 officers who have made revelations about secret operations, and the concern was not so much the content of the book as the mere fact of a former Director-General of MI5 writing memoirs.
Dame Stella who was Director-General of MI5 from 1991 to 1996, having previously served in all the key departments, including counter-terrorism, counter-espionage and counter-subversion. Her most controversial period was as head of F3 branch, which kept a close eye on subversive activities among trade unions and radical political groups.
The only other post-war MI5 Director-General to have been involved in the writing of a book was the late Sir Dick White who was interviewed by his biographer Andrew Boyle.
