> Marine Corps Commandant General Smedley Butler,

He was recently retired at the time.

>who was approached by the men traceable to the J. P. Morgan and Du Pont

Long time Du Pont allies, the Mellons of Pittsburgh, played a crucial
role, too. These families are still close allies and still extremely
powerful.

That Smedley Butler was quite a guy. He was the only guy ever to get two
Congressional Medals of Honor. He got the second one while being shot in
the heart while running across a muddy open field, carrying a wounded
Marine to safety. It was a spent bullet; it hit a metal button and bounced.

He's also the guy who made up the slogan, "The more you sweat in peace,
the less you bleed in war."

Upon retirement he wrote a book. It was a scathing condemnation of
American imperialism, as told by a front line warrior in the brutal
suppression of of its victims. The book is called "War Is a Racket." It's,
not surprisingly, hard to find and not taught in school.

>Yielding to the powerful interests involved, the McCormack-Dickstein
Committee dragged its feet for four years before finally publishing a
report marked for "restricted circulation."

For an excellent contemporary account of the suppression of the
committee's report, read "Facts and Fascism" by George Seldes.
