Pennsylvania got dosed too. Strotium-90 fell on the grass, cows ate it and
we all drank the milk. When I was twelve, the twelve year old kid four
doors down the street died of leukemia. We both had milk delivered to our
doors by the same company. It came from the same cows. They ate the same
grass. Life's a crap shoot. I lucked out. He didn't.
I read John Hershey's Hiroshima that year. Between the two of them they
convinced me that splitting the atom is a very bad idea. It's been forty
years. When are the rest of y'all gonna catch up with me on this? What
will it take to convince you, extinction?

This may not be true. Rigorous testing of air quality may be able to head
off some deaths. If in fact this smoke does tick and it's dispersing over
your area, just staying indoors and behind filters and wearing a mask when
you're out could save your life. The big problem we face here is that most
people trust the government to tell them the truth about the extent of the
danger. This could well prove fatal. They're famous liars.
Remember, strontium-90 is a pretty wimpy carcinogen. Plutonium is what we
have to worry about. The amount it takes to kill you is too small to see.
Oh yeah, and don't forget the non radioactive toxins this fire is sure to
have released. Even if the Lab staff managed to get every toxic under
their control out of the path of the fire, there's still the PCBs in the
power company transformers.
