Peace at any cost is a prelude to war!

THOSE WHO WANT TO BE SEEN SOMETIMES ARE FORCED TO LISTEN
by Thomas A. Droleskey

My late mother was the adopted daughter of a vaudevillian Sioux
Indian
Chieftain, Willaim Red Fox. She had an itinerant existence as a
child,moving
about with the Chief from place to place. Thus, she was not well catechized
in
the faith, frequently mistaking the bad example of
prominent Catholics for failures in the faith itself. She would bait me
occasionally when some prominent Catholic (say, Jacqueline Kennedy or
Frank Sinatra) wanted something from the Church. "Money and fame will get
you anything you want from the Church," she would pronounce.

Well, my mother was not entirely wrong. Money and fame will get one
a
great deal from the Church. So will power and prestige. Far from being
the fault of the faith, however, the fact that those who count for
something in this passing vale of tears are able to get blandishments
from the Church is one of the negative proofs of her divine foundation.
Nothing humanly organized could possible have survived for nearly two
millennia despite all of the bad example that has been given by her
members. It is an unfortunate part of fallen human nature that fame and
power and money have an ability to transfix otherwise rational people,
including clerics. The faith is forced to take second place many times to
the desires of the rich and famous and power to have their egos and their
positions stroked and reaffirmed by men of the cloth.

It was, therefore, a spirit of total disgust came upon me when I
saw the
televised image of this nation's principal supporters of legalized
baby-killing in the front pew left at St. Patrick's Cathedral to attend
the Mass of Christian Burial for the late John Cardinal O'Connor.
President William Jefferson Clinton. Hillary Clinton. Al and Tipper Gore.
Rudolph Giuliani. George Pataki. The scene was nauseating. "Why in the
world are these hypocrites here?" I said to myself while watching the
scene at a restaurant where I was having my daily meal. "These people
support an act which is the destruction of Christ mystically in the
persons of unborn children. They support everything Cardinal O'Connor
opposed. Who is permitting this farce to take place?" I muttered to
myself. "This is simply another case of those who live for photo-ops
wanting to see and be seen. Disgraceful."

Sometimes, however, those who desire to be seen must also be forced
to
listen. Clinton and Gore have wanted photo-ops with the Holy Father over
the years. But the Holy Father has used several of those occasions to
speak directly about the sanctity of innocent human life from the moment
of conception through all subsequent stages until natural death. Clinton
and Gore got their photo-ops, but they also had to listen to the Vicar of
Christ lecture them about the primacy of God's law over human society.
Both of them feign to listen attentively, and Gore once even nodded his
head up and down as though to indicate he agreed with the Pope (someone
should get that videotape out of the archives; it happened either in
Denver in 1993 or at Andrews Air Force Base in 1995). When all was said
and done, however, they shrug off the old man from Poland and return to
the business of dispatching little babies to their deaths under the cover
of law.

The Clintons and Gores, however, fashion themselves as
representatives
of the "people." Everything they do is gauged to acquire and augment
popular
support. Indeed, even the kidnaping of Elian Gonzalez in the
pre-dawn hours of Holy Saturday took place only after the Clinton
administration had taken a poll to determine if such a raid would have
public support. It did, and thus the raid was undertaken. Their support
of abortion is merely an expression of what the "people" believe to be a
constitutionally protected right. The people, always the people. The
Clintons and Gores are the champions of the people.

As we know, though, not all "people" are created equal in the eyes
of
the relativists and positivists and statists and collectivists. Those
"people" who dissent from cultural orthodoxy are the riff-raff, the
bigots, the intolerant, the unimportant, the uneducated, the
superstitious. The average pro-life American is dismissed by the cultural
elitists as a regrettable nuisance whose participation in the life of a
society must be curbed in the name of the "rights of the people."
Pro-life Americans are simply a mass of bigots who live in trailer parks
and/or ramshackle homes in disparate parts of the country.

What a shock it must have been for the Clintons, who have been
treated
with kid gloves by many in our Church's hierarchy, when Bernard Cardinal
Law,
the homilist at Cardinal O'Connor's funeral Mass, said that Cardinal
O'Connor's
lasting legacy was his commitment to the fact that the Church must be
"unambiguously pro-life." The invitation-only congregation in
Saint Patrick's Cathedral burst into spontaneous applause, which was
sustained for two and one-half minutes. Almost everyone in the Cathedral
was standing and applauding Cardinal Law's words near the end of the
spontaneous display of support for the sanctity of all innocent human
life. The Clintons and the Gores and Giuliani and Pataki were noticeably
uncomfortable, squirming about in their seats. The voice of the "people"
is not unanimous in support of abortion, as the elitists want to believe.
And the pro-life Catholics who applauded Cardinal Law's words represented
some of the wealthiest and most successful Catholics in the world's
financial capital, New York. How embarrassing for the pro-abort
politiciansused to getting a pass from Catholic bishops and priests on
the matter of fundamental justice founded in the splendor of Truth
Incarnateto be stung by Cardinal Law's words and by the display of
support those words generated among the worshipers. The question I had
asked of myself in disgust a short while before ("What are these people
doing here?") had been answered. The pro-aborts were there to be reminded
that they are on the wrong side of the Cross of Jesus Christ.

Will Cardinal Law's words have any effect? We do not know. But the
pro-abortion politicians present at Saint Patrick's Cathedral will not be
able to face God when they die and be able to defend themselves by saying
that they were ignorant of how their support of abortion was wrong. No,
God will remind them (if they persist in their support of evil until they
draw their last breath) that He had given them innumerable opportunities
to convert their hearts of stone to hearts of flesh. Our Lord will remind
them that they had persisted in their support of His mystical
dismemberment in the persons of unborn children despite having listened
to the Vicar of Christ, Mother Teresa, Cardinal O'Connor, Cardinal Law,
and the thousands of people in Saint Patrick's Cathedral whose applauding
hands stung their ears and singed their consciences. The more that such
pro-aborts desire to exploit the Catholic faith in order to be seen, the
more God will force them to listen to Him speaking through his shepherds

on earth. They will have no excuse before the bar of Divine justice.
None.

Yes, it is sometimes the case that the powerful who show up at
events to
be seen get their comeuppance. Cardinal Law's simple but direct statement
of truth, which evoked such a display of support from the worshipers,
demonstrates that the forces who support evil in this country are not
unopposed. And while we continue to pray for the conversion of those who
support evil, Cardinal Law reminded the Clintons and the Gores and the
Giulianis and the Patakis that their embrace of evil will be resisted by
the Church until the end of time.
