WHO KNOCKED OUT RUDY?
By Dick Morris
WHEN a politician lies on the canvas, out for the count,
victimized by an anonymous news leak about an affair - at the
precise moment that he is reeling from news of newly diagnosed
prostate cancer - it is a legitimate question to ask: Who threw
the knockout punch?
How did it happen that Rudy's relationship with Judith Nathan,
apparently not a state secret, was publicly exposed only a few
weeks before his nomination for the Senate would have become
irrevocable at the Republican State Convention?
Any good politician knows that an affair, on its own, is not
enough to defeat a Senate candidate in a state like New York. But
such a savvy operative would also realize that this revelation
would cause a moralist like Giuliani unimaginable personal pain.
When his diagnosis with prostate cancer left him personally
vulnerable, it did not take a genius to realize that marital
problems might force this strong but weakened man from the race.
So who did it?
I have no confirmed information on this subject. But I do have
speculation informed by the flow of events which led up to the
publication of the Rudy-Judith relationship and by my ongoing
knowledge of how my former clients operate. They go for the
jugular - the knock-out. And they do it secretly, clandestinely,
all the while publicly acting above such revolting behavior.
It has been reported that The New York Post got a tip that
Giuliani and Nathan ate regularly at a Manhattan restaurant at a
certain time on a certain day. The Post photographed the pair
leaving the restaurant but held the story for more than a week
while the disclosure of Rudy's prostate cancer dominated the
headlines. Then The Post went with the story to be followed by
the Daily News one day later.
Now for the speculation: Could an operative who worked, directly
or indirectly for Hillary or her campaign, have been following
Rudy and have dug up the information about the Nathan
relationship? Could he then have given the story to The Post?
When the paper seemed to be sitting on it, could he then have
tipped the Daily News to ensure that the story got out and to
pressure The Post to print it?
Remember that Giuliani lives in a fishbowl. The press corps dogs
his every footstep. Had the press wanted to run the story of his
affair, they could have done so months ago. This timely leak
likely came from an enemy of recent vintage.
If Hillary and her hitmen were not investigating Giuliani's
private life, it would be the first time that the Clintons did
not try to collect dirt to smear their political opponents. In
almost all their campaigns and scandals, the Clintons hire
investigators (in 1992, they even paid for them with federal
campaign funds) to find ammunition to use their adversaries'
private lives against them.
It was Hillary Clinton herself, in the 1992 campaign, who pushed
the story of President Bush's alleged sexual affair with a
federal employee. This revelation forced the Bush campaign to
tone down its criticism of Bill Clinton's morality in the wake of
Gennifer Flowers.
The Clintons would never be so crass as to leave their
fingerprints on this dirty trick. They would do it through one of
their operatives, lawyers, donors, consultants, staffers or
henchmen. Just like they always have.
Woman after woman has been demonized by their secret police -
usually on orders from Hillary - and have had their past dragged
through the mud and leaked to the press to discredit their
accounts of the president's sexually predatory practices. Did
Rudy Giuliani fall victim to the same detectives who preyed on
Kathleen Willey, Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Juanita
Broaddrick, Dolly Kyle Browning, Elizabeth Ward Grayson?
Did the Clintons' penchant for the politics of personal
destruction ruin Giuliani's Senate bid just as it was once
trained on the likes of Bob Livingston, Henry Hyde and Bob Barr?
Journalistic ethics bar The Post from revealing who tipped them
off, but reporters need to ask tough questions of other sources
to try to learn who outed Rudy.
Smearing with scandal is the Clintons' MO. When a politician
running against a Clinton conveniently falls down so close to a
nominating convention, we are entitled to probe who leaked the
information that led to the knock-out punch.
