My wife Hannah and I went to a meeting last night for 'Concerned
Citizens' here in Santa Fe. There were many people attending
along with a panel of experts including a representative from Los
Alamos Lab. The Los Alamos Rep. essentially said there was
nothing to be concerned about. They, the Lab, took air samples
and nothing really unusual was detected. He described the
technique used to take air samples. He was thoroughly thrashed
and discredited by this group of experts, who systematically tore
apart just about everything he talked about, with scientific
studies and data which has shown that the smoke created by the
fire has been polluted with just about evrything harmful to
mankind. The fire did reach some of the dangerous nuclear and
chemical storage sites of the Los Alamos Labs. There were
explosions reported in these highly contaminated storage areas
for nuclear waste. These explosions sent much radioactive and
toxic metal microscopic particles into the smoke which has
traveled to Santa Fe and some all the way to Albuquerque. Many
people here in Santa Fe could not breathe well because of the
smoke and had to leave town. The smoke was also filled with
radioactivity from the burned plant life and animals which
through the years have become inundated with the radioactivity
from the shoddy methods the labs. used to supposedly get rid of
radioactive waste. They many times just dumped this highly
radioactive material into the canyons around the labs. The
LANL(Los Alamos National Labs) rep. said there were
none,(explosions) however the news on Television reported the
explosions as did many fire fighters. There are four firefighters
being treated for radiation burns, reported by the Albuquerque
T.V. News that the rep. also did not know anything about. The
real big bad problem now is for the immediate future. The fire
has destroyed about 50,000 acres of watershed. The monsoon rains
are due here now!(we had a brief lightning thunderstorm today).
Floods will occur. The floodwaters will scour the burned sites of
LANL, which are littered with pieces of chemical high explosives,
toxic metals and radioactive elements. Any PCBs that the fire did
not convert to airborne dioxin, will be rinsed away by the runoff
of the rushing waters....into the already highly contaminated
canyons around LANL. These canyons have been a depository for
radioactive elements for almost 50 years.... ( For your
information..Dioxin is one of the most toxic chemicals known. A
report released for public comment in September 1994 by the US
Environmental Protection Agency clearly describes dioxin as a
serious public health threat. The public health impact of dioxin
may rival the impact that DDT had on public health in the 1960's.
According to the EPA report, not only does there appear to be no
"safe" level of exposure to dioxin, but levels of dioxin and
dioxin-like chemicals have been found in the general US
population that are "at or near levels associated with adverse
health effects." The EPA report confirmed that dioxin is a cancer
hazard to people; that exposure to dioxin can also cause severe
reproductive and developmental problems (at levels 100 times
lower than those associated with its cancer causing effects); and
that dioxin can cause immune system damage and interfere with
regulatory hormones). It is not a question if the flooding will
occur, but rather when. The floods will blast through all those
contaminated canyons picking up dozens of contaminates mixed in
soils no longer anchored by plants and trees. They will be
flushed into the Rio grande and other water reservoirs here.
There has already been catastrophic problems which will now be
followed by a more magnified type of catastrophic disaster. It
is not just a threat, it is a reality to life here in the Los
Alamos, Santa Fe area. The Los Alamos Labs. and State Of New
Mexico have not done any meaurements or monitoring for Strontium
90. With the decades of nuclear reactor operation, nuclear
discharges, plutonium manufacture and nuclear waste generation,
the cancer risk of burning and resuspending Strontium 90, a bone
seeking substance will damage the immune system. It may not cause
much cancer, but what it does is damage the immune system so that
those who do contract some form of cancer will not be able to
fight it. They will die. Inhaled or ingested strontium 90 in very
low does is far more dangerous than external radiation. Recently
published reasearch shows elevated cancer death rates within 100
miles of nuclear reactors. Toxicologists know very little about
the effects of exposure to multiple contaminates, especially for
sensitive aquatic and amphibious life. Sometimes low level toxins
can be synergistic in effect. And then there is mankind.

It seems that this area in the coming years will be a learning
center that will be able to fill in all those gaps of knowlege in
just how these multiple contaminates created by the stupidity of
Man, effect life on planet earth.

Regards,
Howard.
