Police Chief's Kin Shot Dead ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Story Filed: Monday, May 29, 2000 10:55 PM EDT LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The granddaughter of Police Chief Bernard C. Parks was shot to death as she drove away from a fast-food restaurant in the city's South Central area, police said Monday. The attacker apparently was aiming for a male passenger, who escaped injury in the Sunday night shooting, Lt. Horace Frank said. ``She was in the wrong place at the wrong time,'' he said. Lori Gonzalez, 20, was shot several times by the gunman, who walked up and opened fire on the car in the driveway of a Popeye's chicken stand, Frank said. The passenger, also 20, ducked and was not injured, police said. No arrests had been made. Area resident Bruce Smith said safety concerns keep him away from restaurants in the neighborhood late at night. ``Gang problems, drug problems -- we have in this part of town. I wouldn't consider it 100 percent safe,'' he said. Parks and his family were ``grieving in seclusion,'' according to a police statement. Gonzalez is the daughter of one of Parks' three daughters, Felicia, Officer Jason Lee said. Parks also has a son. Gonzalez's death isn't the first time Parks' family has made the news. In 1998, Clark County, Nev., prosecutors dismissed drug trafficking charges against one of Parks' daughters, Michelle Lynette Parks. .
