After Clinton Cutbacks, Dying Vets get 'Taps' on CD

It's no secret that after seven years of budget slashing under Commander in Chief Bill Clinton, the armed forces are stretched pretty thin.

Recruitment continues to decline and readiness levels are said to be at dangerous new lows. Even military funerals aren't what they used to be.

Newsday's Memorial Day edition featured this little tidbit:

"With the downsizing of the military, there are fewer bands and fewer buglers. So the Defense Department has called in the reserves. Funeral 'kits,' including a CD version of 'Taps,' have been shipped to funeral directors and military bases.

"A Pentagon spokeswoman said there have been no complaints. 'The feedback we have gotten is that folks are pretty happy with it,' she said."

The accompanying Newsday photo showed an army sergeant playing "Taps" at a military funeral in Landover, Md., last month. He was in full dress uniform and standing at full attention. But his hands were unencumbered by any bugle. He was instead saluting as a CD boombox played at his feet.
