I hope Paolo Braccini will soon have a web site up for the Vatican
Conference on "Architecture of the Mind/Architecture of the Brain" (Sept
6-8, 2000 AD). I would expect it to deal with the status of the
"psyche" in an era of developing robots simulating complete psychological
systems. So far we have seen a "call for papers" for this conference. As
soon as I have a URL, I will circulate it on the net.
Is there much difference between rule, algorithm and law? Paolo knows
the Summary of the Law. When Jesus was asked to say which commandment is
greatest, He gave the Summary of the Law. "Love God with all your heart
and soul and mind and strength...." If we call that an 'algorithm', it
must be the algorithm of all algorithms. How can we even 'relate' to the
Creator of billions of stars x billions of galaxies (just for
starters)? How can we relate to a Creator we don't see or hear or touch?
Yet, to the extent that this "love for God" is real, the Vatican must know
how it is to be expressed.
If love can be expressed, can it not then be simulated in a robot? Is
there any aspect of this love which cannot be expressed and programmed?
Now, let's combine that with the notion that "Quantum Robotic Controllers
MUST Be Conscious" as we were discussing with Terry on this list. Does the
Summary of the Law apply to humanoid robots?
There is a Bjork music video titled "All Is In Love". It depicts two
humanoid robots kissing and caressing. Even though the robots are
deliberately shown as having gears and wires and so on behind the
fascades, the fascades themselves are so realistic that I empathized with
them immediately. I was rather "touched" by the scene. Yet the
expressive/emotional features of the robots weren't much more advanced
than what I've seen on ed tv for some Japanese humanoids under
development.
This Vatican Conference is indeed timely...and "vitally" important for
the future of humanity on this planet.
