Motorist not named, nor charged in death of columnist
Tony
Moser, a critic of the Arkansas Democratic Party political
machine, was
killed as he crossed a street in Pine Bluff 10 days
after being named a
columnist for the Democrat-Gazette newspaper
and two days after penning a
stinging indictment of political
corruption in Little Rock.
The
free-lance writer died Saturday night after being struck in
the middle of a
busy road, according to Pine Bluff police, who
have not yet released an
official report on the incident.
Police have concluded that no charges
will be filed against the
unnamed driver of a 1995 Chevrolet pickup, which
hit Moser as he
was walking alone in the middle of unlit Rhinehart Road
about
10:10 p.m. Moser was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m. at
Jefferson
Regional Medical Center.
Police say they have ruled out foul
play and will file no charges
against the driver because he was not
intoxicated and there was
no sign of excessive speed.
Moser, who was
reportedly living in Pine Bluff, was a former
editor of the Little Rock Free
Press, a biweekly alternative
newspaper, from which he resigned in 1995.
Before that he wrote
free-lance reviews for the Free Press as well as feature
pieces
for the Democrat-Gazette. Moser was associate editor of
the
now-defunct Little Rock alternative paper Spectrum from 1986 to
1988.
He was a reporter and columnist at the Arkansas Democrat
before
that.
His weekly column for the Democrat-Gazette began running June
1.
His last column was published June 8.
