This is pretty scary, considering there is no logical basis for this
opinion.
IF -- and I stress IF -- there are beings living elsewhere in the
universe, we have no basis to judge what their opinion and attitude
towards us -- IF they are even aware of us -- actually is.
They may be friendly.
They may be hostile.
They may be totally unconcerned, not giving a damn one way or the other
about us.
But IF they are as intelligent as the general public feels they are,
then if they are hostile they are intelligent enough to present
themselves as 'friendly', since that is what the majority of the public
believes them to be...
No need for a "War of the Worlds" attempt to take over the Earth, the
public is prepared to roll out the red carpet and hand over the key to
the city...
Probably give them a ticker tape parade, too...
