I, naturally, was flattered." -Peter McWilliams I just found out that a Libertarian of whom I was very fond died Wednesday. Peter McWilliams. I don't know how familiar the name is to anyone. He wrote several books, but the one I read was AIN'T NOBODY'S BUSINESS IF YOU DO, an encyclopedic tome dedicated to picking apart "the absurdity of consensual crimes in a free society." A good ol' fashioned polemic just doesn't get any better than this one. Thorough, well-argued, and hysterically funny, it used reason, law, and even the Bible to attack from every concievable angle the notion that laws against consensual activites (drugs, gambling, prostitution, etc.) should exist. I believe it had a major influence on me--though his relentlessly pragmatic approach moved me further away from Libertarianism at the same time he was moving towards it (The book was written in 1993 when his own political views were still gestating--he didn't join the Libertarian party until 1998). The world is definitely a poorer place without him. His death will be--and goddamn well should be--a subject of much controversy. Peter spent the last few years of his life campaigning for legalized marijuana for medical purposes. He himself suffered from both AIDS and cancer and used marijuana to control his nausea. In 1998, he was busted for conspiracy--he had been growing marijuana to supply cooperatives that provided medical marijuana to those who needed it in California. The judge in his case refused to allow evidence into trial regarding medical marijuana, forcing Peter to plead guilty (For some of the shit he had to go through, look here http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v00/n344/a04.html?159127 ). He was released on federal bond to await sentence. Judge George King ordered him not to use marijuana when he was out on bond, and, because his mother and brother had apparently put up their homes for the bond, he went along with this.
