Published Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in the San Jose Mercury News NATIONAL AND WASHINGTON NEWS IN BRIEF ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Witness heard Davidian say, `Light the fire' A member of the Branch Davidians testified Monday that he heard a fellow sect member say, ``Light the fire,'' just minutes before their wood-frame headquarters erupted in flames on April 19, 1993, near Waco, Texas. The remains of some 80 sect members, including leader David Koresh, were later found in the ashes of the headquarters, about 10 miles outside Waco. The fire came 51 days after a Feb. 28, 1993, gunbattle that erupted when members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tried to serve search and arrest warrants on sect members. Attorneys for the Branch Davidians and their families hope to convince U.S. District Judge Walter Smith Jr. and an advisory jury that the government may have contributed to the final fire.
