LAZIO'S �INVESTIGATORS'
Last week, state Comptroller H. Carl McCall - an
all-but-announced candidate for governor - called on the
Securities and Exchange Commission to "investigate" U.S. Senate
candidate Rick Lazio. Lo and behold, there was an
"investigation."
This week, it is learned that the Department of Housing and Urban
Development - headed by McCall's principal rival for the
governorship, Andrew M. Cuomo - has opened its own
"investigation" into the Long Island congressman.
At first glance, the ruckus seems to amount to little more than a
reconfigured federal assault on Hillary Rodham Clinton's opponent
of the moment. First Washington zeroed in its big guns on Rudy
Giuliani; and now it's Lazio.
But it looks really to be about Democrats currying favor with the
first lady, for future considerations.
Just to refresh your memory, the SEC is headed by Arthur Levitt
Jr., whose roots go deeply into New York Democratic politics (his
dad was comptroller, years before McCall), and who was appointed
to his current job by Hillary's husband - who also handed control
of HUD to Mario Cuomo's son.
If this seems incestuously New Yorky - well, it is. So much so
that it's fair to wonder whether all the "investigating" is about
Lazio and the Senate - or about McCall, Cuomo and Albany.
The latest story is that Lazio requested that the federal agency
give $300,000 in mortgage help to the developers of a nursing
home in Islip, Long Island. The developers and financial backers
of the project had both donated cash to Lazio's campaign.
Of course, the nursing home is in Lazio's district. That makes
the developers Lazio constituents - who presumably have a right
to ask their congressman for assistance if they feel the need.
How much do you want to bet that Clinton operatives - right now -
are scouring all of Lazio's constituent-service mail and
cross-referencing it to campaign contribution lists?
How much do you want to bet that none of that correspondence will
be nearly as pregnant with scandal as Hillary's cattle-futures
scam?
How much do you want to bet that a computer cross-check of
McCall's contributors with names of folks who do business with
Albany wouldn't produce a list that smells like Fresh Kills in
the morning?
Cuomo hasn't started raising money yet - but you can also bet
that when he does, things won't smell much better.
McCall and Cuomo are going out of their way to curry favor with
Mrs. Clinton, but they would do well to remember that what goes
around, comes around.
Republicans have computers, too.
