Rudy Giuliani: The Latest Filegate Victim?
With new dirt emerging on Hillary Clinton's one-time Senate rival
New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, it's worth pondering the question:
Are the Clintons up to their old Filegate tricks once again?
The city press wasted no time Tuesday confronting Giuliani with
the sordid details from Village Voice reporter Wayne Barrett's
upcoming book Rudy! An Investigative Biography, which had been
excerpted on the Voice website the night before. Was his father
Harold Giuliani really a "thug", as Barrett claimed; a man who
did hard time in Sing Sing prison for armed robbery and later
became an enforcer for the mob?
"My father died 19 years ago and the details of his life died
with him as far as I'm concerned," Giuliani told reporters at a
Staten Island July Fourth parade. "The fact is, I am not going
to discuss that article or the book. It has no relevance to me
and to what I do as Mayor of New York City or to my life."
Lost in the media swirl of fresh new scandal is the highly
pertinent question: Just how did Mr. Barrett come across this
"shocking" new information? Is it at all relevant, for instance,
that he began his "investigative biography" nearly a year ago,
when it was the New York Mayor -- and not Rick Lazio -- against
whom Hillary Rodham Clinton was running for Senate?
Mayor Giuliani is hardly new to politics, having run three
previous campaigns for mayor of the world's media capital. And
while the New York press has rolled over bigtime for Hillary,
they've been merciless about going after Rudy's private life,
outing his relationship with Judi Nathan just days after he
announced he had prostate cancer.
The Rudy-Judi story was the kind of item that's usually relegated
to supermarket tabloid coverage. But in this case New Yorkers
received breathless daily updates from even the New York Times.
The feeding frenzy forced public confessions from both the mayor
and his wife and probably did more to cause his withdrawal from
the Senate race than anything else.
So how is it, after three bruising campaigns for an office that
made Giuliani a national GOP star, that the overwhelmingly
Democratic media missed this juiciest of all tidbits -- his
father's criminal past -- until Hillary's arrival on the scene?
They're not included in the Village Voice excerpts of Barrett's
book, but in recent months the author has teased other tawdry
tidbits from Giuliani's personal file, such as hints about "still
more women" besides Nathan. In fact, even before the revelation
about Harold Giuliani, advance word made the Voice reporter's
screed sound like nothing so much as an attempt to reduce the
moral standing of the city's most successful mayor in living
memory to Gotham's equivalent of Bill Clinton.
So it's worth asking: Did Giuliani's previous career as former US
Attorney for New York's Southern District give Barrett the means
by which he could document Papa Giuliani's record? After all, as
a young attorney, Rudy would have had to go through an extensive
FBI background check before accepting the appointment. Such a
check would have undoubtedly uncovered any past criminal activity
by family members.
Put that together with the past history of the Clintons, who have
a decades long track record of hiring private detectives to dig
up dirt on opponents. Their favorite dirt digger is Terry
Lenzner, who heads up Investigative Group International -- which
maintains a friendly relationship with the Bureau through
employees like Ruby Ridge and Waco veteran Larry Potts and former
FBI General Counsel Howard Shapiro.
One can hardly blame Barrett for not scuttling his book after
Rudy dropped out of the race. Giuliani may be near the end of
his second term and forbidden by law from running again, but he's
still the mayor of the world's most famous city. And though book
sales won't be what they would have been had the mayor continued
his campaign, the press will gin-up enough interest to sell
plenty of copies of Barrett's "investigative biography" (even as
reporters tut, tut that none of the new negative info is really
relevant.)
But the question lingers: Is it just another one of those amazing
Clintonian coincidences that brand new dirt surfaces on a
politician who's been in the spotlight for decades -- the minute
he opposes Hillary Clinton?
Only Hillary -- and her friends in the press -- know for sure.
