Bush’s web site: http://www.georgewbush.com *********************** Political Growing Pains Who said the Reform Party isn’t a real political party? Over the past several months - and especially over the last few weeks - we’ve witnessed internal strife, heated arguments over rules and agendas, disputes over “principles” and the party platform, mass defections and betrayals, accusations of corruption, financial irregularities, overblown rhetoric, power plays, bylaws disputes and darn-near physical confrontations. Everything except how to actually get their candidates elected. Sounds like a typical party organization to us. ************************* An IRS Audit We’d LOVE to See “The National Education Association, America's largest teachers union, recently reported to the IRS that they spend no union dues on political activities. The reality, reported by the Associated Press, is that the NEA ‘spent millions of dollars to elect candidates, produce political training guides, and gather teachers' voting records.’ In fact, the NEA 2000 election strategic plan calls for some $4,900,000 in expenditures for ‘organizational partnerships with political parties, campaign committees, and political organizations.’ Money will also be spent on ‘candidate recruitment, independent expenditures, early voting, and vote-by-mail programs.’ No political expenses were reported to the IRS from 1993 through 1998.” - “Adam Smith’s Columns,” 7/5/00 ************************ Paul Promotes Pro-Choice ... In Education “In a speech to the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Association of Businesses, Congressman Ron Paul detailed a piece of his education legislation that will give every child in America the opportunity for a high-quality education. Paul's ‘Family Education Freedom Act’ (HR 935) is sweeping legislation that would restore to parents true control over the education of their children. ... The ‘Family Education Freedom Act’ would give parents a $3,000 per year tax credit for each child's education-related expenses. It would allow parents the maximum amount of freedom in determining how to educate their children. It would also be free of guidelines and restrictions that only dilute the actual number of dollars spent directly on a child.” - “Freedom Watch,” 7/6/00 *********************** Gun Owner Thwarts Fugitive “When a motorist sped away after London, Ohio, police attempted to ticket him, he didn’t go far before abandoning his vehicle at an apartment complex. The man hightailed it on foot in a desperate attempt to outpace authorities. Finally, he broke through the rear door of a nearby apartment. The random choice turned out to be a poor one for the hapless fugitive. The resident had already armed himself. According to Madison County Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Sabin, he then ‘advised (the intruder) to lay on the floor.’ The man remained at gunpoint until police arrived.” - “Armed Citizen,” American Rifleman, July 2000 ************************ Disorder in the Courts “President Clinton has reshaped the federal judiciary to fit his activist judicial philosophy, and over 45 percent of the judges in active service are his appointees. Gore appears poised to carry on wherever the Republican Senate eventually forces Clinton to leave off. Do Americans truly want to cement themselves into a situation where it is judges, and not the legislature that really makes the law?” - John Nowacki, Free Congress Foundation, 7/6/00 *********************** Death Penalty for Babies Given Green Light “The Supreme Court's refusal to allow individuals to pray at public events is topped only by its decision in the partial birth abortion case, surely the blackest mark on the Court's record in this century. Teaching a class the other day in political rhetoric, I quipped something about politicians who believe that every woman has a right to a dead baby. But that is exactly what the Supreme Court has now guaranteed.” - Gordon Jones, Free Congress Foundation *********************** Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy of Silence? “(George W.) Bush says his own ‘vision’ is ‘guided by three principles: government should be citizen-centered, results-oriented, and, wherever possible, market-based.’ The first two are near-meaningless bromides. The third - market forces - has meaning, but it's procedural. It may help in deciding how the government should get involved, but not whether. If Bush has a theory to distinguish his thinking on this ‘fundamental issue’ from Al Gore's - or even George McGovern's - he is keeping it to himself. “So why is it left to me to point this out? Where are the voices of conservatism, quoting the anti-government wisdom of Ronald Reagan? Obviously Gore would be even worse from their point of view. But the virtual total silence on the right about Bush's sins against the true faith is an impressive triumph of political discipline over intellectual honesty. Call it a Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy of Silence. What they don't say is better evidence that such a conspiracy exists than what they do say. “In a way, I sympathize. Eight years ago I wrote in a column, ‘I'm for Clinton - just don't tell me anything about him.’ Democrats were tired of losing and not inclined to be fussy. You can't blame Republicans for feeling that way now. In 1992, liberals ignored their man's reputation for personal and political character flaws because he looked like a winner. More than that: Those flaws had something to do with making him look like a winner. This year conservatives are ignoring their man's...ideological apostasy because he looks like a winner. And, once again, it's more than that: The apostasy is part of what makes him look like a winner.” - Michael Kinsley, Slate Magazine, 7/5/00 *********************** CAMPAIGN WAR COLLEGE FREE campaign training for candidates, party leaders and grassroots activists.
