Disgruntled Gore tenant signs movie deal
By Sheila Wissner /The Tennessean Staff Writer
CARTHAGE -- A crew of seven state Republican Party workers moved
Tracy Mayberry out of her home yesterday as Al Gore's disgruntled
tenant signed a movie deal that could further embarrass the vice
president as he campaigns for the presidency.
"I'm tired of putting up with it," Mayberry said after signing
the movie contract at her kitchen table.
"Al Gore ain't nothing but a liar. He's two-faced. He don't
need to be in the White House. He don't even need to be the
mayor of a small town. He just ain't fittin'."
Mayberry said she was fed up waiting for Gore to properly
complete needed repairs on the home she and her disabled husband
rented.
She called the Tennessee Republican party this week to take them
up on a previous offer of help. The party, in turn, contacted
the media.
An orange-shirted Republican crew drove up early yesterday
morning and toted lamps, beds and boxes into two large yellow
Ryder trucks they had rented to move the family to a new rental
home in Lima, Ohio.
Tennessee Republican party chairman Chip Saltsman said the party
had not determined how far to run with the situation, or whether
to use the Mayberrys for campaign ads.
"We haven't talked about it," Saltsman said.
"The vice president started this thing, and we're trying to help
her get some closure on it and get her moved where she wants to
go."
Independent Cookeville filmmakers Rick Martin and Donald Farmer
were wasting no time, however. They appeared at the garage door
in the afternoon with a hand-printed contract giving the
Mayberrys' 20% of the movie's net revenue in exchange for the
rights to tell the family's story of bubbling toilets and a vice
presidential eviction notice.
"It basically is going to be a spoof," Martin said.
Later, the Mayberrys posed for a movie poster holding two of the
dozen or so rifles they have collected over the years.
"It's the big guy smacks the little guy," Martin said in
explaining the movie's appeal.
"It's an interesting situation for the vice president to have
rentals. I have several rentals myself, and there are always
headaches. I think it's not a good move on his part."
Martin previously had approached Tennessean features writer Ken
Beck about co-writing the script.
Martin produced a local independent movie, No Justice, in
Nashville in 1988 and has other film making experience.
Farmer's locally produced Civil War movie, Blood and Honor, is
available from amazon.com. He is associate producer on the
Mayberry project.
Beck, who wrote about Martin's 1988 movie, said he has not
received a follow-up call from Martin, but he hasn't ruled out
working on the script.
"I really think it's got a shot," Beck said. "I think there's
some potential there for a good comedy."
Martin said he plans to use some family members in the movie and
hire other professional look-alike actors.
The film should be completed by October, he said.
After the Mayberry story first broke several weeks ago, Gore
asked a Carthage friend, Steve Armistead, to arrange repairs on
the home.
Since then, sinks and toilets were inspected and repaired, new
gutters were installed, walls were painted, insect extermination
was completed, a new line was installed for the septic system and
electrical work was done. In addition, an estimate has been
obtained for a new roof and exterior pressure washing has been
scheduled.
"All the work that they requested was completed, plus additional
improvements," Gore spokesman Doug Hattaway said.
"It seems like it's something every day, to be honest."
Hattaway had no comment about the movie deal. He said he did not
believe it would damage Gore's campaign or that it rose to the
level of, say, the Dan Quayle "potato" misspelling incident
during George Bush's presidential campaign in 1992.
"The Republican Party is doing their best to distract voters'
attention from the real differences we have on education and
health care," Hattaway said. "But voters are going to stay
focused on those issues that matter to them."
Mayberry said some of the repairs Hattaway mentioned were
completed to her satisfaction. Others, she said, were done
poorly or not at all.
She pointed to the newly installed speckled-grey asphalt tile on
her kitchen floor that was already showing signs of wear, and to
a rotting baseboard in one of the bathrooms as evidence that her
continuing complaints were valid.
Mayberry said the last straw came when one of her eight children,
Anna, 14, was bitten by spiders in bed one night, requiring a
trip to the hospital. She said exterminators had completed some
type of treatment, but that it had not taken care of the bugs.
Calls to the White House were not returned, she said.
"If I plug the TV in, sparks fly from the outlet," Mayberry said.
"A lot of people in Tennessee are for Gore. I've been called bad
names. Two of my animals got killed. I'm tired of putting up
with it."
