"The issue of a United Nations tax system is given such high priority that the issue was discussed on the first day of the Geneva 2000 World Conference for Social Development," Jacobson continued. Freedom Alliance opposes the imposition of the Tobin Tax (a tax on international currency transactions named after 1981 Nobel Prize winning economist James Tobin) and any other kind of global taxes, especially those that would impact American citizens. Jacobson continued, "The United Nations has no legitimate authority to tax anyone, directly or indirectly, so they are endeavoring to do so through the back door by seeking the cooperation of the United States and other national governments to collect the taxes. Yet those who know America's history know that we became a free, independent and prosperous nation, in part, because our forefathers declared: 'No taxation without representation.' That truth is still worth fighting for-not just for Americans, but for any people who value freedom more than government social benefits that bind them to political leaders and governments." The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service convened the meetingon global taxes which was dubbed, "Financing Social Development: Progressive Taxation and Globalization." All who spoke expressed support for the Tobin Tax or currency exchange taxes. The speakers included Robin Round of the Halifax Initiative, which was primarily responsible for getting the Canadian Parliament to pass a resolution last year supporting the Tobin Tax; Julian Disney of the International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW), who wants to see international corporations taxed on 1% of their assets; Bart Bode of Cooperation for International Development and Solidarity (CIDSE), who said international banks can handle the collection of global taxes; Christopher Aguiton of Association for Taxation of Transactions to Aide Citizens (ATTAC-France), an organization which is conducting an international effort to gain support of the Tobin Tax; and Catherine Matheson of War on Want [U.K.], who is working on systems for administering global taxes. The speakers and attendees said an international conference on global financing is scheduled for next year, possibly resulting in the creation of a new international body to administer the taxes. The mission of Freedom Alliance is to promote the American heritage of freedom embodied in our Constitution; to defend the sovereignty of the United States, her people and institutions, and to maintain the security of our country with a strong national defense. -> To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___________________________________________________________ T O P I C A The Email You Want. http://www.topica.com/t/16 Newsletters, Tips and Discussions on Your Favorite Topics www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
