Nader Signs Up Irreverent Admaker

By LAURA MECKLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ralph Nader (news - web sites) has hired William Hillsman,
the irreverent admaker who helped a flamboyant pro wrestler become governor
of
Minnesota, in hopes of boosting his third-party presidential campaign.

The move to enlist the Minneapolis, Minn., media consultant, announced
Wednesday, comes as Nader is traveling the country in an effort to build
support for his Green Party bid.

Neither man could say how much money they'll have for TV or radio ads or
what
the media campaign would look like. But Hillsman promised to produce nothing
like the standard-issue spots churned out by Washington consultants.

``This is going to be a really boring race,'' he predicted. ``It's going to
need somebody like Ralph Nader to make it watchable.''

Hillsman had Jesse Ventura rapping and appearing as an action figure
fighting
Evil Special Interest Man in ads during his campaign for Minnesota governor.

Asked if he'll try to sell Nader to young people using MTV or ``Saturday
Night
Live,'' Hillsman joked: ``We do have this secret plan to make Ralph the
sixth
member of 'N Sync,'' the all-guy singing group that's popular with teens.

Nader ran for president in 1996, but didn't campaign and spent less than
$5,000. This time around, he is campaigning nationwide and says he has
raised
about $1 million and hopes for a total take of $5 million.

While his odds of winning appear slim, he has begun to eat into Vice
President
Al Gore (news - web sites)'s support, which could affect the race. Recent
national polls have shown Nader with about 6 percent support, slightly more
in
some battleground states, mostly at Democrat Gore's expense.

Nader, meanwhile, says Gore's campaign is no longer dismissing him - a point
conceded this week by Gore campaign manager William Daley.

Nader said Wednesday that the campaign had approached three of his
``celebrity
supporters'' and that Gore personally contacted one of them. He would not
name
those who were contacted.

``For three months the Gore campaign would say to reporters they weren't
losing any sleep over my campaign, to which I replied, 'Slumber on, Al
Gore.''' he said. ``But they are not slumbering on.''

Hillsman suggested the strategy for targeting potential Nader supporters
will
likely include the Internet and possibly radio and television.

Hillsman also helped elect Paul Wellstone to the Senate in 1990, using
unconventional ads that featured the candidate frantically running around
explaining, ``I don't have $6 million, so I'm gonna have to talk fast.''

Hillsman has already created a five-minute video for Nader, filled with
pulsating music, artsy black-and-white shots of him amid Washington
monuments
and protesters at the recent World Bank meetings. A bit irreverent, it shows
one protest sign saying, ``Spank the bank; you've been naughty.''

He plans to film new footage of Nader later this week, including a trip to
Minnesota where Nader will meet with Ventura, who has not endorsed anyone
for
president.
