32 new federal prisons are opening up this year!
Are we now in the business of breeding prison labor?

When will we finally wake up?

>From their annual report:

>>>The Future

>>>Q What initiatives are underway to meet growing inmate job needs?

>>>A UNICOR has established a Commercial Market Services Program to seek
business partners from the commercial sector who are interested in employing
a federal inmate labor force, instead of overseas labor to support their
operations. The types of commercial market services that will be performed
by inmates will include labor-intensive operations, such as packaging,
sorting, assembly, data conversion and data entry. The program creates
skills training and employment for inmates in custody; benefits the economy
by creating new civilian jobs in the United States; offers private sector
service-based companies attractive labor rates, cost efficiencies and
geographical access to factory locations; and enhances an inmate's prospects
for employment after release from prison.

In other words it's in Unicor's best interest to expand for more and more
prisoners to become available. It's a feedback loop mechanism. It may help
those who are there now, but by essence it breeds more and more
opportunities for Unicor to tailor their job structure to a growing employee
base. It's a vicious circle. It needs to be stopped. Crime should not and
cannot "PAY" for ANYONE!!! Otherwise we become no different than Nazi
Germany using Jews in forced labor.

Unicor is the perfect example of a good program gone wrong because it is
fueled by the profit motive, NOT the urge to rehabilitate. Killing time at
25 cents an hour is not what prison should be about, especially if 70% of
these prisoners are there for drug related crimes, which for all intent and
purposes would NOT have occurred if drug prohibition was not in place. So
the logical conclusion behind this reasoning is that the War on Drugs
produces slave labor for Unicor.

I don't often publish something on my list I write myself. But in this
instance, since 60 Minutes does not give their transcripts free of charge, I
wanted to compel those who did not have the opportunity to catch the show to
research the issue further.

We're in deep with this nightmare. Few people in America now do not realize
so many of our citizens are incarcerated for offenses that would not have
taken place were drugs regarded as just another way to play with your
consciousness instead of an illegal activity. But the step between knowing
and acting has not taken place. In most part because we do not know what to
do and we feel helpless against it.

Drug abuses should be dealt medically, not legally. Most if not all drug
related crime would not have violent consequences would the profit motive
not be so high. It is artificially kept high by the drug trade, in the
process ruining the economies of drug producing countries like those in
South America. The moment marijuana is free to grow again, and an ounce
instead of costing $600 goes back down to $20 the way it was in the 60's,
ALL our troubles are over.

This is the battle cry and the message that needs to be gotten across. Also
any commercial links between Wackenhut, the Prisons-R-Us company and Unicor
should be investigated

If anything good has come of this it is this, also from the Unicor website:

>>>Respecting the environment is just good business

>>>Executive Order 12873, issued by President Clinton in October, 1993,
mandated that the Federal government take specific steps to become more
environmentally friendly with regard to acquisition, recycling and waste
prevention.

>>>Since the order was issued, UNICOR has taken dramatic steps to move all
its manufacturing efforts into compliance with the order. And in so doing,
we've come to an eye-opening conclusion: what's good for the environment is
also good for business.

>>>Remanufacturing, research has shown that rebuilding engines saves
customers as much as 60 percent of the cost of buying new equipment. Factor
in the preservation of natural resources (i.e., metals don't have to be
refined to build new equipment) and it's obvious that remanufacturing is
economical and environmentally sound.

>>>In fact, all of our efforts at complying with Executive Order 12873 have
been undertaken with an eye toward both improving the environment and
helping our customers stretch their purchasing dollars. Because another
mandate, now and for years to come, is that the Federal government should
intelligently use its increasingly limited fiscal resources. UNICOR is
devoted to making certain our Federal customers get the most for their
money.

But at what cost to freedom?
