I won't argue about whether or not I feel that violence and vandalism can be justified ethically as a response to an inherently violent socio-economic system. Two facts remain, however. a) It's effective, and draws attention b) It's illegal and lands folks in Jail The question remains whether or not a loose-knit collection of thoughtful folks like ourselves can come up with alternative forms of protest that are both effective AND legal. Saul Alinsky wrote a book called "Rules for Radicals" in which he outlines several examples of such protests. Him and fellow protestors once shut down an entire airport (in Chicago I believe) by tying up all the restrooms in the airport so that travelers ran back onto the planes they had just left, resulting in crippling flight delays. He also once got a bunch of people to eat eggs and beans before attending the symphony and flatulating profusely through the performance. Another approach involved an attack on a department store, where a bunch of low income folks swarmed in and ordered a shitload of products to be delivered C.O.D. The resulting cost when the items were returned without payment sent quite a message to the owners. The greatest advantage to using legal forms of protest is that your enemy is powerless to stop you. You cover your ass, and you can keep working. We don't need any more martyrs in jail, using up valuable resources for legal defense. I understand that the GAP has a very loose return policy on its products. What would happen if a couple hundred people dropped in on as many GAPs as we could find, bought their entire inventory, then returned everything five minutes later? What if we tied up the rest rooms in the Philly Airport? Subways? Starbucks?
