It isn't merely an attempt at spurious "knighthood" that Lader is offended
by, it is Hollywood's never ending quest to find demons. Spike Lee might
be able to vouchsafe that opinion as blacks and other minorities within
America have long been protrayed as "Other" - in sexuality, ethic inter
alia. But Hollywood has long relied on the spectacle of foreigners as
"Other" and it seems the flavour of the moment is the English/British
(not that slimmed-down Californian 'brains' in Hollywood actually perceive
a difference between the two) as previously the flavours or disflavours
have been Arabs/East Europeans/Asians et cetera. What Lader and Lee appear
concerned about is this need, this intense need and fixation by Hollywood
to portray anybody as "Other" and, therefore, as "Enemy" and something
(not quite 'someone' or at most someone very less than American) to be
feared, fought and eliminated as a threat to the American ideal. As the
Bard of Avon (Shakespeare not Bacon) stated "Methinks the lady doth
protest too much" - maybe Hollywood has this need for "Others" in order to
distract the populace from realizing that the real threat to contemporary
society lies not in the swarthy unknown but within Hollywood? Forget the
redcoats, how many lives has that sickening Julia Roberts destroyed?
