MORE TRIPP QUESTIONS FOR BILL
PRESIDENT Clinton will be served with a subpoena today ordering
him to answer questions under oath on Sept. 18 about his role in
the sliming of Linda Tripp.
The firm of Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto - which is representing the
former friend of Monica Lewinsky - will maintain that Clinton is
a direct, material witness in her suit against the White House
and the Pentagon.
Tripp is suing because the Pentagon, her employer at the time,
released information from her confidential file to Jane Mayer,
who reported in The New Yorker on March 18, 1998, the damaging
details about Tripp's arrest many years ago on grand larceny
charges.
The bombshell was dropped just a week before Tripp was scheduled
to testify before special prosecutor Kenneth Starr's grand jury.
Mayer, a Clinton loyalist, had met over dinner with White House
hatchet-man Harold Ickes shortly before she got her "scoop." Two
Pentagon staffers, Kenneth Bacon and Clifford Bernath, are named
as defendants.
It was Bacon and Bernath who allegedly violated federal policy by
accessing Tripp's file and leaking the information to Mayer, who
apparently already knew what it contained, judging by her
detailed request for specific information.
The president is directly involved, insiders say, because his
lawyer, Bob Bennett, was quoted in August 1997 as saying, "Linda
Tripp is not to be trusted."
"Who told Clinton's personal attorney that negative information?
Who authorized Clinton's lawyer to make such a statement? Who
else but Clinton?" asked one Tripp supporter.
At the time Bennett trashed Tripp, Newsweek's Mike Isikoff had
just broken the story of Kathleen Willey's presidential groping.
"Monica Lewinsky told Clinton that Isikoff was talking to Tripp,"
our insider explained. "Clinton told Lewinsky he'd look into it.
The next day, [White House counsel] Bruce Lindsay called Tripp to
talk to her about Kathleen Willey and what she [Tripp] was saying
to Isikoff."
In December 1997, a month before the Monica Lewinsky scandal
broke, Clinton asked his former intern, "Did you tell that woman
in the Pentagon about us?" Monica lied and said, "No, I didn't."
The evidence points to one inescapable conclusion, say Tripp's
team: "Clinton was the person directly involved in these
activities."
Tripp's legal team is said to be confident the president won't be
able to avoid the deposition, though his lawyers probably will be
able to keep reporters from covering the proceeding.
