From: http://www.abqjournal.com/news/81353news07-17-00.htm Monday, July 17, 2000 Plan to Relocate UFO Museum Feared The Associated Press ROSWELL - City business leaders fear a plan to move the International UFO Museum and Research Center from downtown Roswell to the city's outskirts would steer hundreds of thousands of visitors away from downtown and devastate its economy. Max Littel, treasurer and co-founder of the UFO museum, said he plans to relocate the museum about 10 miles west of the city to a site off U.S. 70 because it has outgrown its current location downtown. But Roberta Ahlness, president of Main Street Roswell's Board of Directors, is convinced downtown would suffer "a major economic rupture" if the UFO museum moved. She said the museum draws between 250,000 to 300,000 visitors every year and should remain within the city. "There's space still available downtown," Ahlness said. "We don't object to them moving and expanding, we just want to keep them downtown." The UFO museum already has 25 acres of land surrounding the new site "tied up," Littel said. The museum needs $10 million to complete the transaction, he said. "We're not saying that's the only place we want to move," he said. "The main thing is, we've run out of room here." Littel said the number of museum visitors increases annually. This year alone, he said they've already seen 4,400 more visitors than the same time last year. "There's no time element, but we can't just keep twiddling our thumbs," he said. "We can't just stay where we are and grow." Downtown merchants are concerned about what will happen if the museum relocates. "I think it's going to be devastating," said Barbara Hedricks, manager of Cowtown Boots. "I think it's really going to wipe out downtown Roswell." Hedricks estimated that 50 percent of the customers who patronize Cowtown Boots are tourists - many of whom would not be there without the presence of the UFO Museum. Connie Amador, owner of Apache Gallery, said her business is absolutely dependent upon the money the museum's visitors bring in. "We hardly get any town people - unless they have visitors with them," she said. * All content copyright ABQJournal.com and Albuquerque Journal and may not be republished without permission.
