Viva Mexico

Sex, Drug Money, and Politics

Memoirs of a Mexican sleaze mistress.

SEX, murder and corruption, until recently the staples of Mexican political
life, are the subjects of a new memoir by the country's most celebrated
political mistress.

Maria Bernal, a former tailor's assistant, was for two years the mistress of
Raul Salinas, the decadent brother of the former president, Carlos Salinas de
Gortari. In Raul Salinas and I, she depicts an administration wallowing in
corruption and led by men who may have been macho and chest beating in
public, but were frightened little boys in the bedroom. More than10,000
copies of the book have been sold since it was published a week ago.

Following a presidential election in which both main candidates promised to
eliminate corruption, and voters handed the presidency to a new party for the
first time in over 70 years, it seems that Mexicans may be growing nostalgic
for the non-stop adventure of the bad old days. Miss Bernal was thrust into
Mexico's national consciousness when a picture was released of her in a
backless swim suit, straddling Raul Salinas aboard his yacht.

Mr Salinas is beaming at the camera while Miss Bernal is turning
coquettishly. The photograph came to symbolise the sheer decadence of Mr
Salinas, who has admitted to salting away tens of millions of pounds during
his brother's presidency and is currently serving a 50-year prison sentence
for murdering his former brother-in-law. Carlos Salinas has spent the last
few years in exile, flitting between Ireland and Cuba.

In her book, Miss Bernal describes a world more appropriate to Latin American
drug barons than politicians. Mr Salinas had half a dozen homes, from Mexico
City to Acapulco to California, with others scattered around the countryside,
between which he travelled by private jet. At his favourite, in the shadow of
the volcanoes of Puebla State, he maintained lavish gardens, a bull ring, a
staff of 100 and kept expensive paintings, including an El Greco.

Miss Bernal writes that in his bedroom there she uncovered an unusual fetish.
Opening up a cupboard, she found more than 70 charro suits - the
silver-trimmed outfits, with matching boots and sombreros, worn by mariachi
singers.

Mr Salinas was 45 and divorced twice when he met Miss Bernal in Spain in
1992. He had got so drunk he had vomited all over his clothes. Miss Bernal,
then 30, was the tailor's assistant assigned to find him another outfit.
After returning to Mexico, Mr Salinas wooed her long-distance, inviting her
to accompany him to the Barcelona Olympics later that summer.

Miss Bernal describes driving around the city in Mr Salinas's fleet of
armoured Mercedes Benz cars. "At every moment, Raul displayed his enormous
fortune and some exotic desire had only to occur to him for it to be turned
into reality," she writes. "He had people to satisfy every whim. The least
important factor was cost." One of his favourite pastimes was big game
hunting and he often flew to Zimbabwe to shoot elephants, which, he told her,
gave him "indescribable pleasure".

Later, Mr Salinas flew Miss Bernal to Mexico and set her up in a penthouse
flat. She described her second day in Mexico, when he grabbed her on his
yacht to consummate their affair. "The first time was not what I expected.
Raul was very nervous and the subtlety of the courtship gave way to clumsy
movements. I tried to calm him, but the security he projected in his personal
life disappeared in that intimate moment."

Miss Bernal claims she accepted Mr Salinas's proposal of marriage, only to be
rebuffed when he decided his political career demanded that he marry a
Mexican socialite. After he married, he moved his mistress into his wife's
former home, but became distant and suspicious.
