In a stunning interview on Fox News Channel's "Hannity
and Colmes," Rep. James Traficant, D-Ohio, accused
former Federal Bureau of Investigation division chief
Stanley Peterson of being on the payroll of the mafia -- a
charge he previously made only while protected from
                  defamation in the House chamber.

                  "I have irrefutable
                  evidence that the FBI
                  was on the payroll of
                  organized crime in my
                  valley," he announced
                  on national television
                  Tuesday night. "And
                  the FBI and the
                  Justice Department
                  never investigated
                  Stanley Peterson.
                  Now I could be sued
                  -- I'm on Hannity and
                  Colmes. He
                  (Peterson) was the
chief of the division of the FBI in Youngstown, on the
payroll of the mob, was appointed chief of police at the
direction of the mob. They never had an investigation,
and there are agents there right now who are on the
payroll of the mob, and the Justice Department did
                  nothing about it."

As reported previously in WorldNetDaily, Traficant, who
was arrested in 1982 for allegedly accepting $163,000
from both sides of rival gangsters, is now facing an
expected indictment for allegedly having accepted other
illegal contributions over the last seven years. The
eight-term veteran congressman denies the allegations
and says he will defend himself in court.

During his 1982 trial, Traficant also defended himself --
and won. Then Youngstown, Ohio's sheriff, the brash
politician said he was actually working independently in
his own sting operation to break up mob power in a
notoriously corrupt community. His legal victory was won
despite audiotapes obtained by the FBI in which
Traficant talks explicitly with mob bosses about allowing
illegal activities in exchange for their financial contribution.

The sheriff's defense strategy was based on pointing the
finger, literally, at other area politicians, accusing them of
corruption -- most notably former FBI agent and
                  Youngstown Police Chief Stanley Peterson.

Now, Traficant is resurrecting those allegations as he
                  awaits an expected indictment.

The congressman's fear of indictment may be warranted,
since his former aide, disbarred attorney Charles
O'Nesti, was convicted in 1998 for his connections to the
mob, and a former sheriff's deputy was also rooted out
by the FBI. But Traficant is now publicly, and without
immunity, challenging the Department of Justice, calling
the agency an instrument of fear.

"They (DOJ officials) want reams of documents I didn't
have the time to review," he explained on Fox. "And I
started looking at the separation of powers. Who do they
think they are? In America the people govern, and I told
them to go to hell -- go get a judge to compel me, and
let's get our fight on in court right now."

Hosts Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes asked Traficant
during the interview to discuss details of the case,
prompting an outburst by their guest.

"What sense does it make for me to talk about the case?"
asked Traficant. "The Justice Department owns the spin,
they own the newspapers, they own all of the mechanics,
they're so powerful the American people are afraid of
them. I think it's time we stop that. And maybe I'm just a
regular jackass that's going to stop them, but I'm going to
                  try."

"I'm going to try them," he continued. "I'm a son of a
truck driver, and I'm going to try them. They knew what
happened in Youngstown -- the FBI has been on the
payroll, the Justice Department has ripped people off for
years, they've scared the hell out of people, and they've
                  got to answer for it."

After repeated calls to FBI officials in Youngstown and
                  Cleveland, spokesman Robert Hawk told
WorldNetDaily the FBI has "no comment" on Traficant.

The boisterous politician, with characteristic long
sideburns, believes he is a political target and has
threatened to leave the Democrat Party if "attacks"
against him do not cease. Asked on "Hannity & Colmes"
whether he believes the attacks originated from national
or local Democrats, Traficant said he didn't know.

"I hear they (Democrat Party leaders) had a meeting, a
high-level meeting discussing whether or not they were
going to expel me from the party," he said. "I want to say
right here on 'Hannity & Colmes,' I'm going to have a
high-level meeting in a phone booth and decide whether
I'm going to vacate that party and take it over myself. I
think the Democrat Party has vacated the democrat
principles, and I don't think Jim Traficant needs to leave."

"There's a major problem in America today and no one's
listening. Americans fear their government. From Ruby
Ridge to Waco ... they've (the Justice Department) got
an American that's not afraid to tell them to go to hell. ...
                  I'm not afraid. ... I don't know if it's coming from the
White House. I think it's coming from the U.S. Attorney's
                  office in Cleveland."

The explosive interview concluded with an agitated,
red-faced Traficant exclaiming, "There's going to be a hell
of a fight in Youngstown, Ohio. Are you ready for this?
You're looking at a junkyard dog in the face of a
                  hurricane."
