The swastika was originally a sun-symbol. It's found among the ancient
Hohokam and their modern descendants, including the Hopis, as precisely
that, and that's the meaning it had to the early Indo-European speakers who
spread it across Eurasia. It was adopted by the German occult nationalists
of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a racial symbol, but
almost always in its sun-symbol form, namely clockwise or "deasil", with the
arms pointing to the *left*. What the Nazis did, quite consciously, was to
"revalorize" the symbol, *reversing* it and *tilting* it to give it a
feeling of Juggernaut-like power. The reversal, of course, changes it from
a sun-symbol into a symbol of darkness, appropriately for a movement that
honored death and blood. The Nazi swastika runs widdershins,
counter-clockwise--the direction used to curse and invoke the powers of
evil. Whether the swastika can be "devalorized"--returned to its former
value from the perversion imposed on it by the Nazis--is highly debatable.
While the symbol itself cannot be held responsible for the works of the
madman who murdered millions of innocents in its name, any student of magic
and occultism will tell you that those very acts imbued the swastika with
the essence of the malignity that drove them. My sense is that nothing
anyone does to "detoxify" the swastika will succeed. Hitler and his minions
burned the horrors they committed into its nature for the rest of eternity.
If you want to lift up a sun-symbol for praise and worship today, a far
better one would be the cross of Christ...a symbol that existed long before
the death and resurrection of Jesus, and one whose power surely transcends
the all-too-frequent corruption and greed of the Church created in *his*
name. *That* cross is as imbued with love and glory as the swastika is
imbued with hatred and death.
