On a related note, three HMO's announced last week that they
were no longer offering coverage of any kind in the people's
republic of Maryland due to state and federal red tape costs.
Also, my son just in the last week or so built and installed
a small new computer network system (server, workstation and
printers) for a two-man gastyroenterology office.
They bought this system in preparation for new software they
purchased (at $4500) for the sole purpose of filling out and
printing Medicare forms properly. The doc told me that HCFA
refuses claims on a regular basis from his office if the typing
of a word is not *precisely* lined up in the space on the form !
They are also considering the hiring of one additional person
just to handle these forms (if the current staff can't breach the
learning curve on the new system and software).
This is the problem with American medicine.
