As soon as Richard B. Cheney emerged as the likely choice to
join George W. Bush on the GOP presidential ticket,
environmentalists began squawking: Worst environmental voting
record in congressional history! Head of a smog-belching oil
company!
But what most activists did not mention is that Halliburton Co.,
the giant oil and energy services company Cheney took over
in1995, has received two awards from the Environmental Protection
Agency and one from Vice President Gore's own National
Partnership for Reinventing Government.
In June 1996, Halliburton was named an EPA "Green Lights
Corporate Partnerof the Year" for its efforts to1995, Halliburton
received an"Environmental Champion" award for "outstanding
performance" in the EPA's 33/50 program, which urged companies to
reduce the release of certain toxic materials by 50 percent. An
EPA official said Halliburton alsoreceived a Hammer Award from
Gore's "reinventing government" effort in 1996.
So will Cheney be able to challenge Gore for the green vote based
on Halliburton's good corporate citizenship? Not so, said Sierra
Club political director Dan Weiss: "It's like a pig having
painted toenails. There might be a part of the pig that looks
okay, but it's still a pig."
