    THIS NICKNAME IS ONLY "TEMPORARY"
The Atlantic Monthly reports that Bush "had trouble
thinking up his nickname for Skull and Bones, the Yale secret
society to which he belonged in the 1960s, so he ended up as
'Temporary,' the moniker fellow Bonesmen still call him." Bush's
father was nicknamed "Magog," which "is traditionally assigned
to the incoming Bonesman deemed to have had the most sexual
experience" (Grove, "Reliable Source," Washington Post, 4/18)

PEOPLE - BUSH: MOVIE TELLS TALE OF DUBYA'S CLUB

Chicago Tribune's Warren/Armour report that a new movie may
give the public an insight into a particular presidential
candidate's youthful indiscretions. "As if George W. Bush wasn't
getting enough trouble from John McCain, here comes a movie
called 'The Skulls,' which demonizes a secret society at Yale
University." The movie paints a dark and nasty picture of the
elite club that both George W. Bush and Pres. Bush belonged to
as undergraduates at Yale. "George the Younger already is trying
to cast off suggestions that he's just another blue blood
advancing through life on his father's name and his family's
connections. So it can't help that Universal Studios soon plans
to release a film in which a Skull and Bones-like club comes off
as a corrupt, murdering cabal" (2/29).

"BIOGRAPHY" FEATURE
A&E's "Biography" featured a George W. Bush "Biography" last
night. Excerpts follow.
A&E's Harry Smith, on Bush's Yale days: "Like his father,
he joined the secret Skull and Bones Society, and Delta Kappa
Epsilon fraternity, where he became the president. The
fraternity had a reputation. In Bush's senior year, it was fined
for its hazing practices, including branding the fraternity's
name on the backs of pledges. ... Besides partying, George was
also engaged to be married, briefly, in his junior year."

WHITE HOUSE '92 - BUSH: GLOBAL ENVIRO-COP CRITICISM

W.S. JOURNAL's Paul Gigot: "Don't believe the spin" that
Bush is "reluctant" to go to Rio. "The truth is, he can't wait
to go. Which is the problem. Rio is just the sort of jaunt"
Bush loves. "It's more fun even than Kennebunkport. His
telephone chums, perhaps 100 world leaders, will all be there.
He'd once again be chief poobah of Global Skull & Bones." GOPers
also "fret" if Bush doesn't go, Clinton will. "They should buy
      him the ticket.

Buchanan, on ABC's "Brinkley": "George needs
Ronald Reagan to win in [NH] ... the ex-presidents' club is as
exclusive a club as Skull and Bones ... Reagan could do nothing
else when requested but endorse George Bush ... Both [Nixon and
Reagan] are going to endorse George Bush -- they've got to. ...
But ... I'll bet if you asked Ronald Reagan privately what he
thought of George Bush's tax hikes [and] spending [and] cave-in
on the quota bill -- privately he would give you what he thought,
and I think he might agree with Pat Buchanan" (2/9).

WHITE HOUSE '92 - BUCHANAN: LABELS BUSH TRIP A "FIASCO"

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," Buchanan called Bush's
trip to Japan "a fiasco. I think the president did not even
realize the lowered expectations of his own staff. But it was
good in this sense. Mr. Bush has been talking about this global
new world order as though it's Skull and Bones International, and
he got a reality check in Tokyo." On health care: "I said I
would start to address it this week in specifics up at the AARP
convention." Admitting he did not have a health plan now, he
added, "We don't want what the British have where they wait six
months for major surgery, and sometimes it never quite arrives in
time. We don't want what the Canadians have." On a balanced
budget: "No, not in the first year. You've got a $400B deficit
... You're going to have to cut tax rates some of which
initially is going to result in a temporary increase in ..."

WHITE HOUSE '92 - MCCURDY: EXPLORATORY TOUR STOPS OFF IN TN

He was in Nashville 9/19 -- the second day of his tour "to
gauge his chances for a presidential candidacy" -- and will soon
visit FL, CA, LA, AL ,and IL (Richard Locker, Memphis COMMERCIAL
APPEAL). McCurdy, who is being led around by "moderate
Democratic congressmen who he said asked him to make the race,"
was escorted by Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) and "struck themes ranging
from populist to centrist to conservative." He "said Democrats
need to return to the American mainstream and traditional values
like family, individual responsibility and hard work to win the
White House." He contrasted himself to Bush: "While George Bush
was a student at Yale, the son of a millionaire and a senator,
and belonged to an exclusive club, Skull and Bones, I was a
student at the University of Oklahoma and a member of the
Teamsters. I drove a truck to work my way through school. I
worked in a flour mill loading flour sacks into a boxcar. I've
pumped gas. I've sacked groceries. I've done the things that
most ordinary Americans do in order to succeed." When asked to
contrast himself with Clinton and Wilder, "he made it clear that
he believes a credible Democratic candidate must have foreign
policy experience": "My strengths are obvious in the areas I've
worked on in Congress, including foreign policy and defense. If
we present candidates again who are so weak on defense and
foreign policy, we will never be able to engage the President in
debate on important national issues" (9/20).

NATIONAL ECONOMIC COMMISSION: "In a move that heightens
prospects for a compromise on reducing the budget deficit,
President-elect George Bush has tentatively decided to name
Oklahoma Gov. Henry Bellmon (R) and former representative Thomas
      L. Ashley (D-Ohio) to the high level commission studying the
budget problem, according to transition sources." The selection
was first reported by AP. Both are described as "pragmatists."
Bellmon "is certainly not a 'read my lips' kind of guy" according
to one GOP budget expert. Ashley was a Yale classmate of Bush
and a member of Skull and Bones society. Transition source:
Ashley "is a Democrat with a personal loyalty to George Bush. He
has no political agenda, doesn't need money, and won't run for
office" (Blustein, WASH. POST, 12/18). "Mr. Ashley's selection
was said to be assured. But Richard Rahn, chief economist at the
U.S. Chamber of Commerce, could be chosen instead of Mr. Bellmon,
sources said. Mr. Rahn, who advised Mr. Bush in the campaign, is
a firm opponent of a tax increase and his selection likely would
make it more difficult to muster a convincing number of
commission members behind a deficit reduction plan involving new
taxes" (Nordlinger, Baltimore SUN, 12/18). W.S. JOURNAL's Murray
reports that Bush would like to be rid of the commission, but
"the Bush team worries that any effort to scuttle the panel could
have serious repercussions on the financial markets ..."
Commission member Drew Lewis says that if the commission sticks
to its current deadline of March 1, it will split along party
lines. "Eager to avoid such a partisan showdown, Mr. Lewis and
some other GOP commission members are asking that the panel's
reporting date be delayed until September" (12/19).

APN FIFTY STATE REPORT - AZ (7)

An Apache leader charges that Bush's father led Skull and
Bones "grave robbers" who "took Geronimo's skull so he could hang
it on the clubhouse wall" at Yale; the Apache warns of "the
Geronimo issue" and urges a congressional probe of "the Geronimo
issue" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 9/26). Americans for Bush has flooded
AZ with letters seeking donations; AZ Bush chairwoman Hance urges
AZ Republicans not to contribute to the group (REPUBLIC, 9/24).

CAMPAIGN REPORTS - REPORT FROM THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE

IN EGYPT, THEY SIT THERE GEORGE BUSH LIKE. Whatever on earth
was George thinking when he talked about sitting there "like a
sphinx" during a discussion of his choice for running mate? OK,
we'll skip the obvious question -- as in, "Isn't that what he's
been doing all along?" Maybe all of the POST's reporting on Skull
and Bones summoned up some ancient Greek image of the winged
monster with the head of a woman and body of a lion who destroyed
all who could not answer The Riddle. Then again, maybe George was
feeling enigmatic during a week when his buddies were calling him
moderate while he was pandering to the right during platform
discussions -- and getting a tepid response at that. But somehow
the image of the family gathering at Kennebunkport, discussing
weighty issues of the day, and leaving the Great Sphinx aside
deserves a sequel. Maybe next week we'll see George soar Pegasus-
like ... right into the eye of Hurricane Beryl.

NATIONAL BRIEFING - BUSH PROFILES: THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL

           POST's series of profiles is titled, "Man and Politician";
DAILY NEWS's is called, "The Private and Public Man." DAILY NEWS:
"Interviews with two dozen friends and relatives reveal a portrait
of the private George Bush ... that is very different from the
politician who often seems awkward and stilted" (8/7). POST on
Sunday focused on Bush ties to family and friends, including Skull
